Gibson's original story had nothing to do with potential brain-meltdown from too much data. IIRC, Our Hero just had some extremely important (as in, worth killing over) data lodged in his head, then the shooting started.
Fun fact: when he started writing the stories that created the "cyberpunk" genre, Gibson knew nothing about state-of-the-art computers. But he did know _people_, and how they think.
