Blackest Night: Superman #1

Black Lantern Kal-L looks at Superman's emotions, where Supes outclasses Hal Jordan in one panel:

Hal's had to work at representing the emotional spectrum over a few arcs, while Kal-El shows how to be a happily jumbled emotional mess simultaneously. OK, he doesn't have greed or compassion represented, so Hal has one up there (the greed), but still, it's Rainbow!Superman.

This development might have something to do with Kal-L's little killing spree earlier in the book...

Overall, I think this is my favorite book of the event so far, if only because it has the horror-movie effect of not seeing anyone getting killed on-panel, but the black ring power level jumps up along the way.

Really? Fantastic! I need something to wash the taste of ULTIMATUM out of my brain.

The other issues of the event have featured people getting their hearts yanked out, so it's nice to see people disappear, or the patrons of a diner register fear before being shown the outside of the diner as the lights go out and the power level register an increase, rather than Kal-L being yet another person holding a bunch of hearts in his hands. Not that I'm disappointed with the event as a whole, but this is a welcome change.

Mental horror trumps graphic visual horror any day.

The reason I'm avoiding the main line and focusing almost exclusively on the tie-ins.

Yeah.

It's basically a giant zombie story, right? So we were *always* gonna get some gore, it's just how the genre works. But I do prefer when they at least try to be a little bit subtle about it, rather than shoving intestines in the reader's face.

It really nice to have Conner back and the second panel kind of like plays out like phantoms.

This comic was awesome and it actually made me feel that Superman loves Kon, especially when he emoted fear and love when BL Kal-L threw him to earth.

That emotional spectrum of Supes is AWESOME with a capital AWE and a lowercase nothing. If nothing else, the spectrum lanterns add a cool visual styling (to a VISUAL MEDIUM??? REVOLUTIONARY!!!)

To be fair, Superman has experience with Rainbow Powers.

It's actually normal for people to have mixtures of emotions. People who draw rings are usually more focused on one in particular that is powerful. One might even say overpowering in that one in particular takes over.

True. It was just fascinating to see mixed emotions represented (especially as many as Superman was expressing) after just seeing single-color/emotion representations everywhere else.

Yes, also it's pretty. :) But its been theorized the BLs are collecting particular emotions. So you gotta wonder, is Supes extra tasty? Or does the BL Superman have to work more to get Supes to feel one specific emotion?
