"My Father was a drinker"
J.Jonah Jameson has always been one of my favorite characters in comics, mostly because I was always surprised by how much depth that one guy actually had. This story is from Tangled web 20 and is one of my favorite from that series. Also what this about Aunt May marrying JJ's dad?

Good old JJ has had one hell of a nasty Heart attack and to work out his range issues is told by his Doc to go see a Psychiatrist about working out his anger issues, so where does his anger come from?
Well here how they find one of the sources.

Later after going through his high school year we see what he thinks of his son.

I recommend this issue because it's not only funny but it has great moments with JJ. I will also say this about the tangled web series while good at times it was a very hit or miss series that had YMMV by the bucket loads and while it did have some of my favorite stories it also produced really weak issues that felt pretty damn unless. I mean I liked the stories by Garth Ennis, and hell the Rhino one was great in my opinion but I did not like issue 4 as much everyone else(at the time) seemed to love.Anyway check it out and you may be surprised.

They actually explained the continuity. This dude is JJJ's stepfather and the brother of his biological father.

Which still doesn't explain why the writers expect us to sympathize with Jay Sr. so much.

Yes, he treats May and Peter well, but he basically abandoned Jonah to an abuser, and has kind of treated Jonah like shit since he's wandered back into his life.

I'm no Jonah sympathizer, but I'm pretty sure I'd tell any parent who gave me that treatment exactly where and how they could go fuck themselves.

It's like the writers see Jay Sr. the way Dina Lohan sees herself - OMG HE'S A COOL DAD. Please.

The handling, or lack of it, of JJJ's character is actually what I like the least about BND. I don't care about MJ and I think the bad writing of Spidey is over-exaggerated, but I really do like Jameson, and the writing of him has been sub-par.

I think it's because JJJ is so easy to write off. It takes a pretty good writer for most people to feel anything for JJJ other than apathy or annoyance.

God I hate this art. I understand it's a "style" but dang, it's ugly for the sake of being ugly.

ugly for the sake of being ugly

That isn't always a bad thing. Darwyn Cooke's art in PARKER: THE HUNTER, for example.

Just because you don't dig on it doesn't mean it's trying to be ugly.

"Lycanthropy."

Heh. John Jamison is like some sort of axis of weird in the Marvel U. I loved that he was in the Spider-man movies, just so I could tell people that he was a werewolf. It makes the non-fans go O_o just like the factoid that Cyclops's dad is a space pirate.

I love this series so much and really need to buy all the trades, but this issue is the only one I own. It is such a good issue.
And I respectfully disagree with you about #4, but I'm a huge fan of Rucka (and that was the story that introduced me to him!) so I'm certainly biased.

I was not saying it was bad but man the hype at the time was huge for that issue and I thought it was good but not as much as people were saying so not saying four was horrible just not my favorite.

I realize I do this a lot, but as a therapist-in-training, I just can't stop being annoyed at the inaccurate portrayal of mental health professionals in the media; for instance, any therapist who tells a client "here's what my parents said about emotional expression" is just asking for trouble. What is it, a fucking competition? Who cares what your parents said about crying? You're not the client, sir. The smoking man with the funny mustache is, and if his father said it's not okay to cry, then in his world, it's not okay to cry. If you can't see things from his point of view, then you're in the wrong damn profession. Take your silly metronome party favor and go home.

As someone who's in therapy, this was nice to read. Thanks.

No problem. I'm also firmly of the opinion that everyone who does therapy should definitely be in therapy--a theory I both preach and practice--and I know if my therapist said something like that, I'd be on my way out the door before they got their hand off their chin. So I can't help but side with JJJ a bit here.

On the other hand, at least the doctor didn't turn out to be Mysterio in disguise. (Or did it? I can't remember how this ends.)

JJ learns to loosen his tie, but besides that I do think most therapy get a bad rap in fiction, hell it helped many of my family and it's good to hear from real people who know what's it's actually like.

The only thing I've ever read that depicted it realistically is Special which is fanfiction about how Scott Summers goes from being a prostitute to the leader of the X-Men. The therapy scenes even made me feel better about first seeking help.
