Silver Surfer: If you can't trust the Skrulls...
Here's a re-post of a Silver Surfer page I put on the older board. I'm just putting it here so I can use a "Secret Invasion" joke.

The Silver Surfer and Super-Skrull are going to use Zenn-La machinery to give shape-shifting back to the Skrulls through Empress S'ybll. What could possibly go wrong?

"Now, you have to promise you won't try to conquer Zenn-La after we help you."
"Oh, we won't. Helovesyou."
"What?"
"Nothing."

Y'know, I kinda miss the days when the Skrulls DID have a basic sense of honor, despite being fairly nasty in other ways, and you COULD actually count on them to follow through on a bargain like that. I think it always degrades a race of enemy aliens when you make them just a group of thoroughly evil creatures - it's why the Badoon never really worked for me.

I don't mind a race that appears to be subjectively evil from their victim/conquests, etc. But a race that isn't just evil, but continuously self-destructively so, is hard to enjoy.

On the other hand, if they're self-destructively evil you can always blame it on an insane leadership. Maybe in ten or twenty years Hulkling will be running the show and things will be better for everyone.

Exactly - complete evil equals complete chaos. If every Skrull is an evil, backstabbing slimeball, the empire would never have formed in the first place - the species would have destroyed itself long before it achieved space travel. A 'warrior race' is different - a warrior race implies some level of discipline, and presumably a willingness, at some point, to make strategic deals and treaties. (Look at, for example, the Skrull ambassador saluting the dying Captain Marvel as a respected foe in the 'Death of Captain Marvel' storyline - that's not what I would call evil.) I much prefer to look at the Skrulls as a warrior race rather than an evil race.

Isn't that a little "planet of the hats" though? Calling an alien species that spans multiple worlds and numbers in the trillions a "warrior race" seems awfully simplistic to me. Heck, calling an alien species an "anything race" seems very simplistic to me, like every single member of that race are just carbon copies of each other, with the same exact knowledge and the same exact beliefs.

I don't think the term 'warrior race' necessarily implies that ALL the Skrulls are warriors, just that the vast majority of them seem to be. They're always fighting, with the Kree, other alien races, and, of course, us. I venture to state that a race and culture which has repeatedly tried to invade and conquer the Earth cannot accurately be described as a peaceful one.

I would counter that just because a race isn't peaceful doesn't mean that it can be labeled as a Warrior race. America in general is a military-minded, aggressive country, but the average citizen of America, I say with some confidence, could not be classified as part of a warrior society.

...and of course, the US isn't a good representation for all of humanity. Far from it, really.

Getting into Star Trek of all places, some wonder how the Klingons function as a society if they are all warriors. And while all Klingons we see are tough, not all are warriors or "hear the cry of Kahless in their blood." There are Klingon pilots, engineers (Belanna from VOYAGER), scientists.

Actually, SECRET INVASION showed this for the Skrulls. For the most part, the Skrulls don't go "bloodhappy" unless they are fighting the Kree. The SI Skrulls were very different from other Skrulls. Because they were written by Brian Michael Bendis. (ZING!)

Greg Pak said something similar about alien races considered "evil" by the rest of the galaxy. It was in one of those SPOTLIGHT specials regarding PLANET HULK or WORLD WAR HULK.

Pak had a Brood Queen and a Kronan (the Stone Men of Saturn) as part of the Warbound.
