Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lori Lemaris, Lex Luthor, and now Lucy Lawless! Clark, you SLUT!

(Is the LL thing some kind of Kryptonian fetish embedded in his genes?)

ETA: Is it just me, or does Lois kinda look like Lucy Lawless in these scans?

Linda Lee was pre-Crisis Supergirl's secret identity, when she was living in an orphanage. (Yes, pre-Crisis Superman dumped his teenage cousin, the only other survivor of Krypton, off in a orphanage, because it might compromise his secret identity.)

Um, in fairness, he was single and his adoptive parents had been dead for years. It wasn't as though Clark could take a teenage girl into his apartment building home and not have it raise eyebrows. People would have asked questions. Would you really have prefered to have her be a domestic maid in the Fortress of Solitude?

Also, I suspect that when she showed up, the memory erasure of his meetings with her as Superboy (when they were both in the Legion) started to wear off, and so he knew that he had to put her there for her to meet the Legion under the circumstances that she did.

People would have asked questions

"Hi neighbor, this is my cousin Kara. Her parents recently died in a car accident, so as her closest living relative in a position to provide for her, I've been made her legal guardian. She's moving in with me, and I'll be enrolling her in high school next week after she's settled in."

Okay, I'll admit, I'm biased against the whole "dumping her in an orphanage" thing having read PAD's excellent "Supergirl: Many Happy Returns" arc. There were editorial reasons for keeping Superman and Supergirl apart (the whole "secret weapon" thing, and Kara was supposed to be for girls to read), and it would look strange to people at the time if an bachelor was living with a teenage girl, but in-universe it just seems needlessly cruel of Superman.

Do you really think Lois -- professionally suspicious Lois -- would have just accepted that explanation? Without checking up on it?

If Lois could check up on it, Clark could just as easily fabricate papers "proving" his explaination. And well, this is Silver Age Lois we're talking about here, it's not like it's hard to fool her.

But then he'd be shown committing a crime, not just engaging in silly trickery. Do you want him to be more of a dick, or less?

I seem to recall something about the kryptonian symbol for L, when doubled, making some kind of significant shape for Clark, hence it showing up in his life all the time. According to Rucka-via-Mxy, at least. I'll see if I can't dig up the scans for you. It's always hilarious when writers try to justify the meta in-story.

Why would Kryptonians have a symbol for L? It's a completely alien phonology. It'd be like ants having a pheromone for wedding ring.

Who says the phonology is completely alien? Their alphabet lines up one-to-one with our own, it seems fairly clear they use basically the same phonemes as English. It's not like "Krypton" or "Kal-El" or "Zod" are particularly difficult for the average American to pronounce.

Yup. It makes no sense apart from laziness, but most "alien" alphabets in comics are simple substitution ciphers for the Roman.

It's so readers can have fun deciphering them.

Well I suppose a phonology that happens to be exactly the same as ours is more plausible than an alien species that looks exactly like us, but still, it gulls me that somewhere along the line, DC just threw up their hands and declared a no-contest on world-building.

And Krypton, Kal-El, and Zod could always be English transcriptions of Kryptonian vowels. Given how hard it is for, say, an American to pronounce Japanese, I doubt Kryptonian is something you can pick up with a correspondence course (though, as noted, world-building fail).

It's not laziness. It's so readers can figure out what the Kryptonese dialogue is saying, by replacing the letters. (The Kryptonese sentences are just English with the letters replaced.)

But pre-Crisis, the Kryptonese alphabet was more along the lines of what you're looking for, if you're into that sort of thing. It had 118 letters.

There's actually an interesting story behind it. There was a letter in a letter column asking DC to publish the Kryptonese alphabet. The response from E. Nelson Bridwell, DC's Superman continuity keeper, was that it'd be difficult, because the Kryptonese alphabet had 118 letters. Some time later, he actually set about creating a Kryptonese alphabet. However, Bridwell was *such* a stickler for continuity that he felt obligated to hew to his earlier letter column comment. And so it really did wind up with 118 separate letters.

It'd be more like ants having a pheromone for leg. Since Kryptonians' mouths seems to have the same structure as humans', it's not a huge stretch for them to have an 'l' sound. And if they have the sound, they could easily have a letter corresponding to it.

That Lucy Lawless crack makes this so dated. Haha.

This was from the 'Girlfrenzy' series spot-lighting on female DC characters, and this one was all about Lois. I really enjoyed it. Because, yeah, Lois and Clark are absolutely adorable here.

(we also get Lois versus killer polar bears, and Sergeant Steel in naught by a skimpy bikini later on in the issue, so yeah)

Yeah, I always sort of thought the motto of the story was "it sucks to be Sarge Steel." Recent events in Wonder Woman have made me wonder if that an official motto for the whole DCU.

Well, at least she wouldn't have to worry about Superman cuckolding her for Wonder Woman.

I love Amanda Conner's art here and in Power Girl and in Wed. Comics, yet I hated it (a lot) in the GA/BC Wedding Special. Maybe it was the influence of bad writing?

Also, in what universe could Lois ever pass as Lucy Lawless? Even in terms of body type, she looks nothing like Xena.

How tall is Lois is supposed to be? Because Lucy Lawless is almost 6ft tall. Erica Durance seems to be the tallest Lois Lane, at 5'8.

I thought the 'I'm not a warrior princess' was funny, but not for their humorous intent. Xena isn't literally a princess. I didn't know so many people were under the impression that she was.

Also, "Winston, Manitoba"? Is that what Churchill, Manitoba is called in the DCU?

Wow, Lois is really rockin' the femme fatale look in that first panel, isn't she? And incidentally, just what kind of pants is she wearing? I'm far from an expert on women's fashions (being, uh, not a woman), but I've never heard of pants that come with built-in spats.

Stirrup leggings. They do exist! Mostly a dated article, and if used now surely either for wacky couture/street fashion or extra warmth (i.e. skiing).
