Yet another faction in the Blackest Night
There's a certain panel in Green Lantern #43. I'm surprised nobody seemed to have caught it.

It's Evil Star.

"Who?", you ask. Well, let Wikipedia educate ya.

"A scientist on the planet Auron dedicated himself to cheating death by drawing power from the stars themselves. He invented the starband, which made him immortal, but twisted his mind toward evil and prematurely aged his fellow Aorans. The people of Auron wanted him to destroy the starband, but having tasted immortality he refused to give it up. The ensuing battle left all of Auron lifeless except for the scientist, now known as Evil Star. Evil Star sought new worlds to conquer and came into frequent conflict with the Guardians of the Universe and the Green Lanterns, including Hal Jordan."

"Evil Star's primary weapon is the Starband. The Starband draws the energy of the stars to prolong Evil Star's lifespan, create force blasts or hard light constructs, and powers the Starlings. Starlings are miniature versions of Evil Star that possess superhuman strength and invulnerability, and are under his complete control. Starlings need direct commands from Evil Star to function, and they become directionless if he is unconscious. If Evil Star is kept away from starlight for a prolonged period, his powers fade away."

There's also what seems to be a throwaway line about Evil Star conquering Sister Sercy's planet here. With the entirety of the War of Light, the Blackest Night, and the future appearances of Krona, Cyborg Superman and, evidently, Evil Star, Geoff's got a lot on his plate.

No. Nekron is another pre-existing character and very above Evil Star's abilities. So far, his only connection to the Blackest Night is searching inside Black Hand for the Black Power and unintentionally (I guess) awakening Hand's death powers. This happened back in Green Lantern #6 or so. The panel is a flashback finally revealing who was behind Hand's abduction and dissection.

i'm aware who nekron is, but the panel above matches with nekrons design in blackest night seen on the cover to #5, which was posted here a while ago, http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/800128.html#cutid1

The guy the Starlings are digging around in? That's Black Hand.
Evil Star's the silhouette in the background.

I'd imagine that he'll be another character Black Hand would go after--using the stars to cheat death and all.

Black Hand mentioned that those who cheated death for whatever reason--like, for instance, the Hawks, or Ollie--were somehow "in the way." If this is Nekron gathering power, that makes sense--every soul he loses, the further from our reality he goes.

Making me wonder if they'll bring back that "open wound in space" that Nekron had been exploiting. Given the predilection for guck and splatter in GLC, I imagine they will, in MUCH more detail.

I'd love to see Nekron's reaction if ever confronted with Deadpool.

Early in Geoff's run these guys upgraded, along with Black Hand, the Shark and Hector Hammond, the latter of which they were revealed to have given powers to in the first place. (Instead of the very same meteorite that evolved the gorillas of Gorilla City). However, latter in Geoff's run they seem to have been retconed out of Hammond's origin and replaced by, I dunno, something else.

Yeah, the Starlings thing seems to be a newer idea on Geoff's part. When they appeared, they were just weird German-speaking aliens.
