Five GI Joe unmaskings, and singing Dreadnoks!

During the run of Marvel's GI Joe, you were on very rare occasions shown what was under some of the most famous masks in the Hama-verse.  I'm going to share with you today the real faces of Storm Shadow, Zartan, Destro, Cobra Commander, and Snake-Eyes.

Let's start our journey with Storm Shadow, and a story about a car crash.  I'd love to ask Larry Hama why he chose car wrecks as such a running theme, maybe one affected him at some point in his life.

Why yes, that is Cobra Commander in the car there.  Billy's having an unexpected reunion with his mom, Mrs. C.

We couldn't have said it better ourselves, Storm Shadow.

Which brings us to Zartan.  You know, a person could write an entire book on how Zartan, that ninja clan, cobra, and car accidents are the spine that held the Marvel run upright.  There were alot of good arcs that had nothing to do with those events, but the real central characters all can trace their roots back to it.  I think even Firefly gets involved in it at some point as the Faceless Master.  There was a really good write-up on this in S/D 1.0, I can't remember who the original poster was now though.

This is before he aquires his camo tech/mutation.  I don't think they ever definitively say which it is, but I've always leaned towards him being a mutant.  It could be he just wasn't fussed about using it in these pages, too.

Ok, cut back to much later.  Cobra Commander and Destro have escaped from the wreckage of GI Joe HQ, The PIt.  They took their usual clothes off and they're driving down the road in a stolen 'vette. The following events are taking place before the first scans, though.

The next scans take place just a few issues later.  He really does try to make good on this...

...but never really gets the chance.  He's dead, he's buried, but he gets better.  I'm not exactly sure *how* he gets better, I need to read more of the series that I missd the first time around.  I never could reconcile him shooting his son in the newest runs because of these pages, I don't think Hama would have ever written him that way.  I could be wrong though, for all I know he's the guy who DID write that scene.  I don't know who's writing the newest stuff these days yet.

Now, on to Snake-Eyes.  His un-masking is the only one that really couldn't be included in this long-running connected chain of events.  We'll start by showing just how his face got hurt in the first place, which is narrated by Scarlett.

And we jump WAAAAY into the future, printing-wise.  Snake-Eyes is at a plastic surgery clinic, and we finally see what his face looks like today.  Considering what just happened to him, I'd say he's actually mended fairly well.

He actually comes out of it OK, there's no Quesada-like swerve at work here.  I think something happens to him again in the future though, but it's been ages since I read those issues.

Finally, I mentioned in the beginning singing Dreadnoks.  A friend of mine showed this video to me yesterday and I knew I had to put together a good GI Joe related post so I could show it to the rest of you.

I think the easiest way to explain why Cobra Commander shot Billy in the end, is that he just went nuts.

Maybe he realized that, in his universe, when a person gets shot he eventually comes back to life, more evil than ever before.

Thus making Billy the perfect son for a double-plus-evil Cobra Commander upon his eventual resurrection!

If I remember correctly, megatexas was the one making G.I. Joe megaposts.

Also, and again IIRC, Cobra Commander got dropped into the same cloning vat that brought Storm-Shadow back from the brink of death, in order to resolve the civil war in COBRA plotline.

Waitasec... you mean, while running Cobra and all that entails, CC still kept up his driver's license?

Well sure, I mean if they got Al Capone on Tax dodging, odds are they could get Cobra Commander on driving with an expired license. You can never be too careful.

Well, it kinda helps that he kept his identity secret all that time. If Cobra ever truly went south, he could ditch the cowl and retreat into anonymity, never having to pay for his crimes.

I actually plan on posting the storyline of Cobra Commander and Billy, but I'll probably only do the Marvel series.

He actually comes out of it OK, there's no Quesada-like swerve at work here. I think something happens to him again in the future though, but it's been ages since I read those issues.

I think the doctor is working with the Baroness, and he gets burned again right after.

How did Cobra Commander escape death after being shot in the back? Another Crimson Guardsman tailed the traitorous one and Raptor. When they left he undug Cobra Commander and took him to a doctor who also was a Crimson Guardsman (ah the Fred series).

Anyway, after surviving that thanks to the doc CC played it silent putting his Crimson Guards in certain positions ploting his return. Though during this time he also spent it selling Terror Dromes to foreign powers making a ton of money for Cobra.

And you say Hama wouldn't shoot Billy? The dude upon return, buries him and all his enemies and traitors in a volcano. After that when Billy continues to be a thorn in his side as others he brainwashes him with the that mindwave scanner Dr. Venom (along with the Baroness, he already tagged with hidden commands to return Destro and Zartan to loyality with it).

Not to mention does shoot Billy again in the first Devil's Due run. As some of the people said before CC lost the last parts of his sanity and humanity when that Fred shot him. It only confirmed to him you have to be truly evil to survive in this world. Hence his rutheless nature upon his return and since.

Well like I said, I started skipping around alot. If he did, then I really am suprised and stand corrected. CC getting shot was really the tail end of where I kept close tabs on the series.

Yeah I can see why given how bad it got with the ninjas after one hundred. I posted the burial scene upon CC's return and the first time he shot Billy.

Thanks for the scans of CC getting shot. I once had the issue but lost it. That drove me away from the book till about the Cobra Civil War and then Destro's utter ownage of the Fred. I don't know why I even stuck with the book for most of the ninja stuff. What was I on? O_o

I do have to admire Cobra Commander's cool, efficient method of car theft.
