I really want to pick these books up.

Maybe when BookDepository is back up...

Also, according to the second scan, Objectivism was the cure for the Anti-Life Equation in Final Crisis. :p

Oh my God I must have this book, and whatever else they have. I love how Jesus is hopping away on the cross, and she's just standing all nonchelant going, "Yeah, that's right--I'm Ayn Rand, bitch."

Interesting comic, nice way of summing Ayn Rand up.

Sadly my reaction to this is "and thanks to Bioshock we all know now what Objectivism leads to...massive underwater cities taken over by genetic freaks"

But seriously, I actually think this philosophy is just an intellectual's way of wanking of. They do what they want to because they can and claim the sun shines out of their arse.

Considering her history, you can sort of see where Rand is coming from, unfortunately, that does not make her less of a bitch (or her writing any less awful).

Either way, Action Philosophers is brilliant and everyone should read it. Marvel made a smart move when they contracted Van Lente.

I dunno, I kinda appreciate the reasoning of the basic principles:
-Make decisions based on reason, not emotion.
-Don't do something just because an "authority" figure tells you to, but because you think it's reasonable.
-The fruits of your labour are your own, not anyone else's.

Mind you, I disagree about the idea that altruism is so wrong. Didn't she ever hear of enlightened self-interest?

I'm going into Ayn-overload. There was a pretty extensive article in the New York Times last week about how Wall Streeters worship her.

I love that Greenspan was mentioned here, but the writer should have cleared up how her name is pronounced. It's long-i I-n, not Ann.

Why does this remind me of the Big Book series?

Not that doing so is a BAD thing...

But as far as Philosophies go, I think I'll stick with a mixture of Humanism and Absurdism.

"...individual achievement was rewarded, not confiscated."

Because becoming a pharmacist in USSR would've been in no way dependent on the family's wealth before that. Bourgeoisie as the height of individual achievement? As something than anyone would be able to reach provided they were sufficiently anything in a society where meritocracy wasn't the norm? Really?

I'm starting to realize that Brian Michael Bendis may have put a lot of Rand's ideas and philosophy into ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #122 had Ultimate Shocker ranting about how his great invention was going to be stolen by Roxxon executives who could never "create" anything. Spider-Man didn't see how being smart enough to create "shockers" justified robbing banks, but Shocker was crazy.

Objectivism is just a bullshit excuse rich people use to never give money to charity to help other people.

And while I don't agree with Rand, I can understand why she went down this path, growing up in the hell of Soviet Russia.

The thing with Ayn Rand is that, while I agree that she was batshit crazy, I DO agree with some of the things she says. As a creative person myself, I definitely want to be able to take the credit for the stuff I do, and be guided by what I think is morally right and just, not what other people think is right and just. We all have to be guided by our own minds and consciences, and if one lives only for other people, one ultimately winds up living a very unfulfilling life. It's the 'A is A' part where she starts going crazy - if you refuse to allow for subtleties and grey areas, you're not taking into account a good two-thirds of life. Also, I think she had a faulty understanding of what altruism IS. Altruism is not 'bowing to the will of the unwashed masses and those who claim to represent them'; altruism is doing something selfless for someone else because you can, because you feel sympathy for that other person or persons. If you never practice altruism, then you never give anyone birthday presents, or drive a friend home, or a myriad of other things that one does out of a sense of basic decency. Basically, one must be true to oneself, but if one doesn't at least acknowledge the presence of others, and try to get along with them, then one lives an awfully lonely life.
Oh, and yes, Jesus bouncing away on his cross is pretty damn funny.
