I also wonder if writers in the 60's - 80's would have thought along the lines of, "It's likely some girls will read this, I want to make sure there's a lady character around doing things they'll find interesting."
If so, it would be a far more inclusive spirit than that in which modern comics frequently appear to be written. ("No women will be reading this so why can't I have fun giving the guys what they want?")
