Best Friends Until Retcons!
One of the biggest losses after the Great Supergirl Retcon Distaster of 1986 was the loss of the friendship between Supergirl and Batgirl. While never utilised like it should have been it had its moments. In light of the post on noscans_daily about female friends in comics I offer something more wholesome and heartwarming. Also I bring news that Supergirl will team up with the new Batgirl in Worlds Finest #3 at the end of the year.

One of my favourite moments in Crisis was this rooftop talk between Supergirl and Batgirl. In a nutshell, with great power comes great responsibility.

Of course Supergirl dies and Batgirl lives, the danger is the same. The more power you have the bigger monsters you have to face. The Anti-Monitor was to Supergirl what the Joker was to Batgirl. (Ok so she didn't die but her Batgirl persona did) Our goliaths aren't all the same size.

TED!! (...sorry I has a moment there)

After The Great Sueprgirl Retcon Disaster relations between Barbara and the super-family distanced. DC actively turned Power Girl away from that friendship. Barbara didn't ask Matrix into the Birds as she was 'too super'. It wasn't until Kara returned that it was reignited properly (I think the last christmas special was posted already where Barbara and Kara) but there was a pitfall.

Turns out that Barbara is clayface and Kara dumps him in gotham harbour but it was nice to see them together again. There is something about how both of them look together than can never be replicated and sometimes a little nostalgia about what has passed is just right. It was also a nice nod to the New Batman Adventures story

part one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOoVc2Kxwik
part two- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmKM9volh0w

Then came her encounter with the latest Batgirl- Cassandra Cain

supergirl batgirl sunstones Pictures, Images and Photos

who tried to kill her and they have never sat down, talked about it and made up. The new Supergirl/Batgirl adventure will be interesting to see to say the least but for me, well I already have my fave BFFs together elsewhere...

Freakin' DC, Cass never really got to enjoy any of the dynamics that came with being Batgirl. Jerks treated her like an ugly cousin.

Otoh, she also got the best character defining moments! Stuff that really meant something! Stuff that showed, perfectly, unarguably, how much of a hero she was! Stuff that makes her untaintable a character! Stuff that not later writer would ever be able to ignore!

I want to cry.

Ow, my eyes. Put a warning on that Churchill art!

(I can't even like the nostalgia factor in that scene, because it does it at the expense of the actual original Batgirl's actual character. Kara says she caught the Clayface ruse because she "read what happened to the original Batgirl" in Oracle's files - it does not strike me as especially plausible that Babs would hand out information like that to a complete stranger. She didn't even tell Dinah that she used to *be* Batgirl, much less that she was shot and paralyzed, for at least the first year of their extremely intimate partnership. Giving Supertorso the deeply private inside scoop on her just as a casual aside says to me "these guys don't actually care about Babs, but they're still trying to capitalize on the fact that I do." Sorry, Loeb, no dice.)

It could have been something like, 'The original Batgirl retired due to injury.' I'd expect Supergirl to have had access to Batman's files though, which should've been more complete.

Nah, she specifically names her info source as "Oracle's files," and the way she talks about it - "what happened to the original Batgirl, it was horrible," or something emphatic and invested to that effect - definitely indicates she's aware of specifics beyond a mere "retired due to injury." In fact, the way she says it makes it seem even more complete than "paralyzed by the Joker during a home invasion" or whatever, which is the most you'd expect even Bruce's files to say; she reacts viscerally, like she somehow learned the actual details of the kidnapping etc.

Which I can't see Bruce giving her access to, let alone Babs.

But Oracle provided files to a lot of people, like the JLA. Considering the way she was treated like the Trinity's favorite daughter, it makes sense that she was provided files for a working knowledge.

Why would Oracle offer files to Rex Mason and Ollie Queen on stuff she doesn't even talk about with Dinah?

I ask similar questions as to why Supergirl was trusted so suddenly--Krypto didn't like her! Did they ever explain that?--but Oracle WAS trusted as information broker to the JLA. Maybe different writers characterized her differently.

Well, that's my point; this is a characterization of Babs that's wildly in contrast to her established habits under years of other writers (even Morrison, for whom characterization seems to be a fairly low priority). It shows a lack of respect/interest by Loeb in Oracle and her current canon or character, which makes it impossible for me to buy the Kara-Babs teamup here as coming from any kind of authentic respect for Babs either.

Krypto didn't like her! Did they ever explain that?

Krypto doesn't like anybody. (Except he likes Diana. But everybody likes Diana. I will credit Loeb with some amusing dialog exchanges.)

Actually as much as the Supertorso introduction is forced and ridiculous and other increasingly melodramatic adjectives of disdain, that part basically works for me, at least on a conceptual level. Clark is a trusted and respected member of the superhero community, and he vouched for her. When Superman says "this is my cousin, she's cool," you aren't going to see many people have a problem with that. And those few who you'd expect to need more than that (Bruce and Diana frex, or those less part of that community, like Grace) were generally the ones who did.

Supertorso wasn't made with a lot of respect, so I'm going with that.:)

The only handwaving you might do, is that just as many JLA DID know Bruce's identity BACK in the day, they knew Barbara Gordon was Batgirl. Barbara's assault by Joker was public news, so it might've been expected to be occasional gossip. Oracle was the big secret, and one Barbara wouldn't have wanted connected with herself. You'd think she'd have a clinical account of Batgirl's 'retirement'.

Barbara's assault by Joker was public news

You can help this along by ignoring the way her tenure in Congress seems to have been soft-retconned out, too. As a public figure, that would have gotten a lot of coverage that she wouldn't get as just "the Commissioner's daughter" (particularly since I'd expect a world toward the ideal end of the scale like the DCU to adhere more closely to journalistic ethics about private citizens). Though it gets complicated when you remember the retroactive alienation of the Bats and the excision of Kara from the timeline; post-Crisis, the circle of people who knew Bruce Wayne was Batman narrowed to, like, Clark, full stop, and of course Babs didn't even have her Super anymore.

My brain hurts trying to make sense of who knows what...I mean, Hal Jordan was like, "oh yah and Tim Drake is Robin" and I'm like, what? Even if Bats and Hal buried the hatchet, that doesn't make sense under that continuity! I can only figure Superboy Prime punched continuity BACK to where everybody knew stuff...:P

I think that the "New" Batgirl will actually be Barbara Gordon, but I think she will be retconned to be a little older than Kara. The pages where "Batgirl" and Supergirl, take on Holly & Ivy, could very well be a precurser to the return of friendship of Barbara & Kara.

I liked Bronze Age BG very much. I don't like that she got retconned out of being that woman and into being a kid post crisis and I don't know why they'd retcon her again. I'd very much prefer that they didn't de-age her again and didn't make her Batgirl, the same way I wouldn't want Dick de-aged and made into Robin. IMO it'd be a step back.

I know everybody doesn't agree with that and I started to say that we'd know in a week and a half but I bet we don't even definitively find out by the end of Batgirl#1.

I REALLY wish that DC would just hurry up and TELL us who the new Batgirl is going to be. I'm sick of them dangling clues (or rather, non-clues) in front of our faces like carrots on a stick. (Personally, I think it's still going to be Cass, but nonetheless, I wish they'd just get it over with.)
Oh, and it never fails to amuse me when Harley whips out one of those impossibly gigantic cartoon mallets. It's like she's got access to the Looney Tunes prop department, or something. (If she does, I can't wait for the day she whips out the portable hole.)

Get this: BG #1 comes out on Aug. 19, and I just read an interview with Bryan Q. Miller and he wouldn't say for sure if we'll find out who Batgirl is going to be even IN Batgirl #1.

Thanks, DC!

(I hope it's Cass.)

Oh, honestly - well, at least it's this month. My hope is that if it's NOT Cass, it'll ultimately wind up being a Battle-for-the-Cowl-esque fight between her and the new Batgirl - and she'll get her old job back. I think there's a good chance of this, as DC seems inordinately fond of this type of storyline - they've done it for just about every major character, and a number of the minor ones. Batman's been through it multiple times, so have Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Superboy, I think Supergirl, Nightwing, the Metal Men, etc., etc. It only makes sense that Batgirl will get her turn at it.

Excellent publish. Then once more you can get back again to the entire argument about what helps make Jewish tunes, Jewish? If you might have a klezmer band which is performed by non-Jews is it Jewish? The reality that the phrase “mazal tov” can be a phrase inside song make it a Jewish song? Without doubt Jewish audio may well indicate various things to diverse men and women.Nike Dunk High
