I must have been affected reading this because I read Bucky's last comment as "Crap! No! No!" and it seemed to fit.

That green paperboy looks like he just caught an eyeful of the contents of the Ark of the Covenant.

There was a war on! They didn't have time to actually look at people! ;)

And people wonder why they accept the Green Goblin as their hero?

Apparently the good citizens of the MU have always been idiots.

Can't blame then, it was a disguise worthy of Futurama's Hugh Man!

It's always been the oven mitts that made that one for me.

In much the same way, it's Skull's Plan 9-ing with the shield that moves this story from regular stupidity into classic territory.

Apparently? Hasn't it been fairly obvious for a looooooong time now?

Personally I couldn't care less about the Marvel universes normal people after how they treat the people that keep trying to protect them. Which is one of Marvel's flaws. It's not that the people are just scared they're downright stupid about it. How many times have they embraced criminals as heroes as they struck down those who've been helping them for years? Seems to happen all the time really.

They used to be able to learn. One of Stan Lee's favorite tropes was to have the hero do something heroic and then a policeman would say "I know he's supposed to be a criminal, but there's no way I'd arrest him after this." Or something to that effect.

You just know the Red Skull is sooo turned on the entire time wearing that costume.

"Thank you so much Captain for defending us. Even now you keep your shield up high in front of your face, ever watchful, ever ready for those darned nazis. But... I'm not sure that you realise... you see, you're saluting down there."
"Was? Oh erhm... FOR JUSTICE!"

Also I really like your icon. So sofisticated a mollusc.

...

Why is it every time I go to Scans_Daily, I end up getting a nasty thought or mental picture stuck in my mind thanks to posts like these?

Why, why, WHY?! ;)

Not to quibble (because lord knows the Marvel Universe is full of all kinds of stupid) but when this was published it would have been the Timely Comics universe, no?

That's no excuse, as it was written by Stan Lee, who even then should have known better.

Wouldn't the responsibility go to the artist (Jack Kirby?) who also should have known better?

Actually, I think it was a deliberate choice and his constantly hiding his face behind the shield was supposed to make him look sinister. Sometimes it even works.

Kirby was off the book by #10. It was probably Al Avison.

WOW! Steve appears to be being played by the great Ron Perlman in the fourth panel there. :) Kudos to him avoiding typecasting in this case.

::snicker:: This reminds me of Plan 9 From Outer Space, I think. The actor finishing the movie for a dead Bela Lugosi held the cape up to his face to hide it.

Oh, honestly. Would it have killed you to have put on a little makeup or something, Red Skull? Or a rubber face-mask, perhaps? I know you have 'em; you use them at every opportunity. Or hell, even wrapping bandages around your face would've helped - it'll certainly add credence to your 'I've been sick' routine if you look like you've just gotten out of the hospital. But no, you've got to use the SHIELD as a mask! Sheer genius.

'Right this way, Captain - oh, I'm sorry for jostling you like HOLY CRAP WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FACE?! You look almost like... the RED SKULL!'

'Oh, eh, nein, nein, officer! It's the, eh, the reason I've been away, you see - someone fired a bullet at me, and it, eh, hit in the exact right place, and... Boom! Goodbye face!'

'Good god! You poor fellow! Are you sure you're feeling well enough?'

'The knowledge that I am helping my country shall help the pain - onward!'

'Yes, SIR! Right down there, sir! *wipes away a manly tear* Now, there's a REAL American.'

It's actually worse than that; the skull-head is a mask at this point, so he's deliberately choosing to wear his Red Skull mask under the Cap costume.
