If I remember right, it wasn't quite a fear of the dark. More like a pathological embracing of the dark, after Norman Sr. left him alone in an abandoned house for a day to make the boy "a man".
Plus, Senior caused the family to go bankrupt and knocked Norman and his mother. (I think this part is DeMatteis, not Jenkins.)
