I picked Szilard over Einstein as my example because Einstein didn't really work on it after the letter, I think. It's understandable that the scientists didn't realize that the bombs might be used on something else than a strictly military target while they were working in the Project.
I hadn't read that about the Nazi scientists. A lot of explanations that reflect badly on the Reich, but not that particular one.
