For what it's worth, I completely agree with you. There's certain genres that just don't *work* with that sort of thing. Plus, I've been finding it strange for the last few years that I can read Northlanders (a mature readers title about Vikings) and find less overt and in-your-face references to cannibalism and sexual assault than I do in books about Superman (Identity Crisis) and Captain America (Ultimate Clusterfuck). There's totally a place for "mature," but most of this stuff seems to strive for puerile.
