Streets of Gotham #5 cover (and some Dustin Nguyen art)

I don't believe this cover has been posted yet:

Huntress! In Streets of Gotham! Yay!

...wearing the Jim Lee costume! Boo!

I will say this though, Dustin Nguyen manages to make the costume look not so weird. And according to his blog: "my first shot at Huntress on a cover, i've not been keeping up wiht her lately, so was given reference for the costume. i can hear fans everywhere complaining to no end already."

Hah! It's interesting that he was given this costume. Hrmm. I'm guessing this is Tony Daniel's fault? Since he wanted Huntress in that costume for her two seconds in Battle for the Cowl, that is?

At any rate, I just wanted to point out something (one of many things) that I appreciate about Nguyen's art. A quick look through his DeviantArt gallery and I think it's safe to assume that like most male comic book artists, he likes drawing women. But even when he does cheesecake, it never dehumanizes the women he's drawing. You still get a sense of who they are as characters, and even when he's doing a more cartoon-ish style, there's still a general plausibility about them (in that they still probably have room inside for internal organs and spines and all that other stuff vital to the human body).

Take, for example, this art he was apparently selling at SDCC:

It's Gotham Girls posing on dirt bikes (or whatever they are). The concept is fairly cheesecakey. And yet, you know exactly who they are, what differentiates them, and they look like could possibly exist in reality. Even their poses are somewhat fitting: you've got Catwoman looking kind of tough and indifferent, Poison Ivy is posing, perhaps a bit seductively, and Harley is just...Harley.

(My only nitpick is that I question whether Ivy would want to advertise something that promotes fossil fuels, but whatever.)

Aaaannnd here are two panels from Booster Gold #19:

Context is for the weak.

That SDCC pic is the current wallpaper for my laptop. ;p

I rather enjoy Nguyen's work.

Yes. Nguyen is God, and it's hightime EVERYONE realised this. With few exceptions, I don't think I've seen too many other mainstream comics artists treat the female figure with nearly as much respect as he does. He obviously still likes to draw attractive women, and his versions of the Gotham Girls and his work for Wildstorm is a real testament to this. They're sexy, but not ridiculously sexual. His Batman's a classic, too.

So yeah, I love it everyone I see that he's getting a bit of respect, I just think it's a shame it's taken him until his Detective Comics run to get truly noticed.

Although I don't like the above wallpaper, I love Dustin Nguyen's style. I love the clean lines and his use of watercolors in some of his images. It's very pleasing to the eye. I also like his figures - not too muscle-y, but sexy all the same. His art is one of the reasons why I'm following Streets of Gotham.

Gosh, I love how in the SDCC pic Selina looks like she has some actual body fat that isn't the boobs.

Inoffensive cheesecake is cheesecake I'm willing to dig.

That is clearly a "Rooftops of Gotham"-oriented cover. I'm not seeing the streets.

To play Devil's Advocate here, perhaps Ivy's bike has a diesel engine tuned to run on biodiesel (i.e., vegetable oil), or an ethanol engine? Neither one uses fossil fuels directly, and biodiesel actually costs less energy to extract from vegetables than you get by burning it, so it's an actual viable energy source instead of merely a fuel that requires burning fossil fuels *elsewhere* to make it...

HUNTRESS! *bounces* I was beginning to think everyone had forgotten about her.

You know.. all that costume would really need to make it passable is to have the flesh tones filled in black. I wonder if that's something they might do before it goes to print?

I'm a little bit curious that she seems to have picked up a Bo-Staff from somewhere - I'm pretty certain she's never used one before - maybe she took the idea from Tim?

I really love his art. And like you say, it's like even though he's using the bad costume, someone she still doesn't look so foolish. She looks solid and interesting. Actually, Dick looks too wide to me--too broad in the chest and thigh. But it doesn't bother me in his style. Like, I only notice it because he puts across personality in all of them, but Huntress most of all, I think. She looks like somebody who'd be interesting over a beer as well as as a superhero.

Some how the Jim Lee costume doesn't look as bad here. The belly panel seems smaller. And Helena is looks like she is sporting a little bit more weight - not that is a bad thing.

Oh, these are great! I LOVE his Catwoman (OMG, she looks great! And incredibly tough!) and Huntress especially here. Nice! It's too bad that Huntress gets this costume, and especially annoying that it might be because of, as you say, a two-second appearance in BftC, but good point at how they come across as cheesecake without dehumanization (YAY!). And this is the best pic of Huntress in this costume I've ever seen.

Go Nguyen! Great pics!

All these women are drawn relatively proportionately. Especailly in comparison to most.

What the hell kind of comic book is that?! =p

It's Gotham Girls posing on dirt bikes (or whatever they are). The concept is fairly cheesecakey. And yet, you know exactly who they are, what differentiates them, and they look like could possibly exist in reality.

Ivy and Harley aren't riding dirt bikes. Selina is riding a bar hopper.

"Fairly cheesecakey"? More like VERY cheesecakey. And good GOD, what is wrong with Harley's legs? Anatomy fail.

The girls looking, as you put it, as if they "could possibly exist in reality" may be for one of two reasons: One, there's a longstanding tradition of automobile and motorcycle manufacturers using women to sell their product. Two, the girls look like they're riding customized bar hoppers, etc. here, and there's the stereotype that women bikers (particularly Harley riders) are either thin and sunburned with bleached feathered hair or heavyset with huge busts. So Nguyen may be playing to that or poking fun at it.

Ivy on the dirt bike is the worst - because, yes, when you're riding a dirt bike, you don't protect your arms or legs.

I LOVED Dustin in V.I.P.! Though I don't see how working with Pamela Anderson would acquaint one with real women's physiques. I DO wish a writer would address the death wish associated with Helena's selection of that particular costume..or at the very least make anty Robin appearing in the same issue wear the bare-legged costume. As dfor Ivy, I've never seen her walk anywhere.

Nguyen's Man-Bat looks absolutely fantastic, proof that he draws more than just beautiful women. I had the privelege of talking to Ngyuen on DeviantArt (not actually talking, more commenting on his work and him replying). However, from some angles his faces look somewhat out of place.

wow. dustin really rocks! the ladies just look so ... classy, and I love the detail on their bikes, especially harley's. i'm surprised nothing cat-themed for Selina.

my ideal look for sirens would be guillem march on faces (when he has the time to draw them properly) and dustin on bodies and everything else.

btw, just a small request to the op. is it possible to change the tag from selina kyle/catwoman to catwoman/selina kyle just for consistency with the other posts?

My favourite part about Dus is how he draws waists. Too many artists make incorrect waists that really turn me off the comic. You can see how the organs would fit in there. He also keeps in mind that Selina has given birth and should have a bit of a more solid form now. Wider hips and whatnot. I love Harley's quad. She just looks so IC.
