Movie Avengers line-up finalized
According to io9, it'll be Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Nick Fury (he counts? That's like saying Franklin Richards is a member of the Fantastic Four), with possibly the Black Widow and "members of the Hulk universe" as additional team members.

I don't know, it's a bit disappointing to me. On the one hand, it's good they're not going the route of some other comic books movies and just cramming the story with a bunch of ~~mutants~~ Avengers. On the other hand, is it really the Avengers if you don't have Hawkeye? The Vision? Ant-Man? Wonder Man? To say nothing of the fact that 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes' are three white guys. You can't throw in the Wasp/Giant-Girl, She-Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, Photon? Just Scarlett Johannson, maybe? It just seems to me like the point of an ensemble movie is that you can incorporate some of the more minor characters who couldn't carry an entire movie by themselves.

	I migh think they are worried about overloading the cast. Give enough screen time to the charatcers. Tho' they have to have a female in there somehow...or else ! (Reply to this) (Thread)

	I think it had more to do with being worried about the cost of salaries. Jackson and Downey will expect a good payday, and the other actors are going to want something similar to what they're making. (Reply to this) (Parent)

It just seems to me like the point of an ensemble movie is that you can incorporate some of the more minor characters who couldn't carry an entire movie by themselves.

Thing is, though, that this isn't a start-from-scratch ensemble; they've got three guys who will all have had one movie (in Tony's case, two) to themselves. The audiences will be turning out to see them.

I'd include Black Widow for sure, but otherwise I wouldn't push it further for a first movie.

	Actually, it may well mean the Avengers are going up against The Leader, which will then mean the Hulk dropping in to save the day. It might also mean that they're going to tie the sudden mass shifting that happens when Banner Hulks out to pym particles that were massively gamma irradiated, leading Ross's super soldier program to the creation of Giant Man and Wasp... They don't necessarily mean Nick Fury is going to be out there beating up bad guys along with Cap and Thor, they could just mean he's in overall command of the group and is ready to support the Avengers with SHIELD.

If you're going to do original Avengers, you're gonna need Ant-Man and Wasp/Giant-Girl. Just use the Marvel Adventures origin for them.

She-Hulk seems like she would be a nice addition, but either you'd need an entire movie to set her up, or just have her show up and mention she's the Hulk's cousin and got a blood transfusion from him. Monica "Captain Marvel/Photon" Rambeau would be another good addition, you probably wouldn't need much exposition beyond "exposed to weird energies, now has light powers."

I think that the problem is that, if you have characters that can't carry their own movie, you have to make time in the Avengers movie for their origin story. It's not just to show how they got their powers; obviously, you could just have Hawkeye walk in and say "I'm the best archer in the world" and leave it at that. It also creates interest in the characters. Remember, the only successful superhero team movie (at least if you're talking about theatrical distribution success) is X-Men and the sequels, and in that, the individuals all had the same origin, and the team's origin was simplicity itself. The obvious exception was Wolverine, who had his origin spread over three movies.

Also, WRT a couple of other points: did the original poster miss the point about "In terms of the additional I think Black Widow, sure"? They're making a distinction between the core Avengers--which have (after the very early history of the comic) always been Cap, IM and Thor, more or less--and additional characters. Which means that they might add in others, as well; has anyone else wondered why Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch never showed up in X-Men? Also, it's not clear whether they're saying that Fury will be in The Avengers or whether he'll just be in The Avengers.

Considering that Fury carried his own title for years and is one of the most highly-trained normal people out there, the comparison isn't fit; he's certainly not a 'sidekick' type and the Ultimate Universe version of him is possibly even more capable than the 616 version. More than likely he'll be in the command role but he's still a capable operative.

Seriously? That's it? You'd think they could include Ant-Man and Wasp, at least. You could even use a variation on the MA canon for their backstories, so they could be introduced semi-jointly. And if they're trying to find Avengers who've had previous movies as much as possible to save on backstory, I imagine Spider-Man could be added in. She-Hulk should totally be included, too, because she's awesome!

	I thought it was a given that Fury would be in an Avengers film, what with Samuel L. Jackson popping up at the end of Iron Man with his "Avengers Initiative" proposal. That aside, I love that Bruce blatantly calls it a "blouse"! (Reply to this)
