New Avengers v. Transformers: Cybertronians Could Totally Take Magneto, Shut Up
so yeah, the New Avengers/Transformers crossover.

basic plot: there's about to be a war going down between Symkaria (yes, a silver-haired lady shows up for a panel or two) and Latveria. SHIELD, detecting a mysterious structure in the area, sends in the Avengers to figure out what's going on.

(addendum: those whose computers tend to choke on image-heavy posts, the comments warn me that you might want to beware.)

And surprisingly, this one's only partly on Doom's head.  )

Popeye, crossdresser with a cause
THIMBLE THEATRE by EC Segar is so one of the greatest comics strips ever to hit print. The humor, pathos, action and suspense remain amazingly effective almost a century later. The art and dialogue work perfectly. And the Fleischer Brothers cartoons from the 1930s (even though not quite as good as the strip) show much of this magic.

This Sunday page from June 1932 is a good example. Popeye has taken in an desperate orphan*(for a rough weathered old sailor, he has a heart like a big marshmallow). Trying to make her feel at home, he puts on a skirt and plays at being her grandmother. Popeye is so confident in himself that he's not embarassed at all to go out in public like this. When the abusive "Big Butch" comes to claim the little girl, he has no idea what he's confronting and Popeye thrashes him. It's interesting too that the cop not only doesn't try to stop the "woman" beating her husband unconscious, he encourages it ("Knock him around all you please, Grandma.")

_________

*(1932, no Department of Child Services or anything like that, no Welfare, millions out of work and going hungry. There were plenty of homeless children on the streets.

I love Lovecraft, part 2.
Three more stories, posted in their entirety, from the first volume of Cthulhu Tales (totally free online, thanks to the good people at BOOM! Studios. There is still some icky Lovecraftian horribleness, but still fairly SFW.

As promised: The King in Yellow! The horror in your local comics store! And this guy!

Movie Avengers line-up finalized
According to io9, it'll be Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Nick Fury (he counts? That's like saying Franklin Richards is a member of the Fantastic Four), with possibly the Black Widow and "members of the Hulk universe" as additional team members.

I don't know, it's a bit disappointing to me. On the one hand, it's good they're not going the route of some other comic books movies and just cramming the story with a bunch of mutants Avengers. On the other hand, is it really the Avengers if you don't have Hawkeye? The Vision? Ant-Man? Wonder Man? To say nothing of the fact that 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes' are three white guys. You can't throw in the Wasp/Giant-Girl, She-Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, Photon? Just Scarlett Johannson, maybe? It just seems to me like the point of an ensemble movie is that you can incorporate some of the more minor characters who couldn't carry an entire movie by themselves.

Babs Walks!

With the new Batgirl about to make her debut and consensus that it is not Barbara Gordon, I thought I would share an BoP tale where Babs gained the use of her legs. The story was written by Terry Moore with art by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti. Got to be good, right? A not very dial up friendly 13 and half pages from issues 47-50 of Birds of Prey.

The Saga of Itty
I posted it over at the place I post stuff and I was told I "NEED" to post it for the world to see, and so I shall! The wonder of Itty should be given to the world, after all.

Dial-up warning: this post is epic big. Like, 40 images or something over about two decades, so proceed with caution if bandwidth is tiny; I've so been there.

So, what's in all this epic-ness? Cuteness! Tentacles! Alien sex! Hal intentionally crashing into a tree! Homoerotic tension with Ollie! Homoerotic tension with Barry! Hal in chains! Hal as a giant! It's all here, and more, in the more-or-less complete story of Hal's little buddy Itty. What is Itty, do you ask? He's one of the Ayries. They look like this:

It takes him about those twenty years to actually have lines, which does not stop him from being amazingly helpful. And adorable.

I really like the character and all, but I don't feel that big need to see him pop back up again. Would that be super-neat? Oh sure. But sometimes, the end is just so good that it leaves you with just that right feeling of closure.

SDCC: Fables
Every year at the Vertigo Fables panel the creators give a 'throwaway' page, usually a gag, but this year they made a page hinting what the next 100 issues of Fables will be about.

From Willingham:

"...For the first time we decided to go the other way and do a serious, very dramatic Fables story, one that has far-reaching consequences for the series to follow. This one-page comic hints at what the second hundred issues of Fables will all be about.”

Psycho Loves Jerkass: Laura and Julian (Part III): A Night on the Town

Our series hits Part III, easily the longest segment, covering the "Mercury Rising" storyarc that ran from New X-Men #33-36. Laura and Julian take a break from saving each other (though they end up doing that too) to save someone else, and Julian tries to get her to go cold-turkey on killing bad guys. And Emma finally directs her righteous bitchiness at an wholly appropriate target.

Oh, and Laura has clearly been sitting in on Marvel's creator summits, enabling her to predict the future.

The mini-comics of Brian John Mitchell
So, Friday night I went to see a couple bands play at one of my favorite bars. The first one was Remora, the one-man show of Brian John Mitchell, head of Silber Records. He played his effects pedal more than his guitar, but to interesting effect. Anyway, when he mentioned he had mini-comics on sale for fifty cents, the dollar in my pocket was already spent.
