SDCC: Marvel Buys Marvelman
Marvel announced at SDCC that they've bought Marvelman (better known as Miracleman in the states) from creator Mick Anglo. 1 image under the cut.

More at CBR here and here and Newsarama.

So how long before they bring him into the MU?

"Publish" not "publich."

I only want two things:

Reprints of the first four trades.
Gaiman to finish what he started.

That's all.

Having read the report, one assumes this is neing done in concert with Neil Gaiman as part of the effort to reprint the Alan Moore Marvelman books. Of course, how Marvel will DO that remains in question.

Reprint it in trades?

Do a 'remastered' comic with touched up art and digital coloring?

Some combination of the two?

Three words: Absolute Edition. Hardcover.
Only way it's gotta be.

And I will personally decapitate anyone who thinks he can digitally recolour art by Rick Veitch or John fucking Totleben.

Next up: Todd McFarlane spends the entire night staring at his million-dollar baseballs, in numb shock and despair.

Well, the article said that this character dates back to 1954. So as long as the rights haven't somehow migrated to Image or Mcfarlane since then, I don't see how he could support a claim like that.

"Those of you who have read ['Incredible Hulk'] #600, the giant spoiler is that at the end of 600, Bruce Banner can never become the Hulk again,"

I call horsecrap on this, Hulk's one of their legacy characters. They might de-power him for a long time, but at the end of the script Banner is Hulk again.

Of course it's horsecrap. Everything Marvel declaires about their characters is horsecrap.

Remember when they said they'd be no more mutants? How many have they introduced since then? 3? 4?

Wasn't IH600 in the past? It seemed to be by the little I read here that was posted. And I know Hulk is running around in Skaar

I.. I think I just had the teeniest bit of an orgasm. Lord knows I'd sacrifice several of my firstborn children for a reprint of the first three books.
In fact, I think I'll go out and "prepare" some right now, just in case.

What worries me the most about this is, I haven't seen anything yet that answers the core question. Did they just purchase the character and will start over, or did they manage to secure enough of the copyrights to republish the original run?

If it's just the first, not impressed. Let's be blunt, The Sentry basically is a more psychotic version of Marvelman. If it's the second, I may take back quite a few of the bad things I've said about Joe.

I think I'm one of the few who likes Sentry, but he would s**t himself at the things Kid Marvelman has done lol

Based solely on the details of the transaction (ie, no mention of any of the many, many litigants), it's not clear to me that Marvel has bought the rights to the 80s stories that are so tied up, just the original stuff, which they could run with (there'd be nothing stopping them from hiring Neil Gaiman to come in and start fresh, for example).

I just wonder what would attrack them to the character ? Any one got a timeline of this . Last I heard McFarlane had the stuff in his gagrage and wouldn't give it the Neil Gaiman...

Incidentally, I find the name "Mick Anglo" hilarious for some reason.

From Quesada's CBR interview, it seems like they're still working out the issues with the 80s content (he hints that the out-of-print trades may indeed see reprints); but Marvel's got lots of cash, so corralling the various participants would be within their capabilities.

Wasn't Marvel supporting Neil Gaiman's efforts to buy back the rights to the 80s series? I don't see pigs flying but maybe they're sprouting feathers...

You know, for an announcement that was supposed to shatter the Internet, this left me considerably underwhelmed. Sorry for those of you who love this stuff, but it's quite boring to me >_>

Mind you, I always like to see Alan Moore drama, 'tis always fun :D

Hrm. I hope he doesn't get imported to the MU. I mean it could be interesting to some extent, but part of the point of Miracle Man was that Reed Richards isn't useless I don't know how Marvel could maintain a resemblance of a status quo with Miracle Man and be true to the character.

After writing that I realized the last part of the last sentence was superfluous, it's Marvel.

I enjoyed the Moore issues, but Gaiman spiraled into a "Humans are imbecilic pets of Cthuloid creatures who are given cool toys to keep them placid" theme that normally I'd expect to see from Moore. I can only hope if the series is continued, that it gets slightly less depressing.
