Runaways #12
The aftermath...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Last issue a plane crashed into the runaways' Malibu home, killing Old Lace.
The owners of the plane investigate the scene. But someone among them is already familiar with the house and its inhabitants.

Strain's kind of disappointing me now. Rauch's coloring worked a lot better with Pichelli's fantastic art. Frex, this.

At least you can tell the characters apart now.

I can't say I'm impressed. I'd even go as far to say that I liked the Whedon run better. I liked the BKV run best of all, of course, but this...

Ah well. Shan't give up yet. Lets give this team time to settle in.

Alright Chase, either you killed someone or you didn't kill someone. Make up your fucking mind man.

This is why I keep notes on that sort of thing.

I can't wait to see what horrible incident the next writer adds to Chase's past to justify his troubled personality. Drop kicked a puppy? Blew up a school? Raped an entire orphanage?

I can't understand why they do that. Wasn't 'being hit by his father' more than enough?

To be fair, BKV himself was the one who started the "oh and maybe Chase killed a guy" hints (which I think this is supposed to be a retcon of, rather than adding to his body count).

Everyone in this issue, with the possible exception of Nico, needed to get kicked in the face.

I get that they're scared and jumpy, and I'm sure I'd be snippy as hell too if I were buried under a house, and all told given their ages and the situation they're probably holding up remarkably well, from an objective viewpoint. But unfortunately, I don't find it particularly entertaining to read a story where everyone's being a nonstop ass the whole way through, no matter how justified.

Even Molly managed to annoy the hell out of me in this one. That takes some doing.

Oh no look out guys Chase actually has his personality back and isn't a linebacker or Xander. Run before the character development gets you!

Sorry, this is the first time Runaways has felt like itself since BKV and the general negativity is starting to annoy me. Yes, this issue is hard to deal with, but it elicits an actual emotional response, even if it is revulsion and irritation.
"Gert was the one who kept us together" Is a line of Karolina's from book 6 and I think Old Lace's death is very symbolic of the team falling apart. OL was the last of the glue that Gert provided, without that they fall to pieces. Tl;dr= Angst will ensue gais.

That's not a good thing.

Nice to know I'm not the only one happy that Immonen remembers that Chase has done a lot of growing up since his lacrosse jock days. I've never really read Runaways for the lighthappyfun (though that's awesome too); for me, it's always been about watching kids grow up way too fast and not fast enough all at the same time.

tl;dr: *pops the popcorn of ANGST* *munches*

Hahaha, the purple. And... I'm okay with it. Tone-setting.

I like dark and crazy Chase. I'm interested to see where this goes. Of course, I have no access to the full comics, so I have no opinion on anything else. Chase has a low threshold. He's reactive. I like seeing that back.
