It also may have had something to do with the fact that he was recovering from an illness at the time - he was not at his best, and he's used to being at his best. If he HAD been at his best, he probably would have had significantly less trouble with all those villains, and therefore might have been justified in assuming that he could take care of things. And he DID have Azrael in his pre-lunatic stage to help out - although they hardly focused on that.
