That name again is Mr. Dark

We delve a little into the backstory of Mr. Dark. Also, the truth about one of the long-running objects in Fabletown's possession is revealed.

Back in the days of Gepetto's reign, a recruiter for the Empire shows up at a sorcerous prodigy's home.

So there's a Cenobite on the front cover, the late Jonathan Brandis makes a cameo as a sorceror (A shame he's not called Mozenrath) and Mr Dark appears to be the Childcatcher from Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang? Now I'm impressed!

Cue spontaneous bedwetting from anyone who's ever seen the movie!!!

"Lollipops! Ice Cream! Chocolate! And it's all free today!"

There are two different anecdotes about that character that I love.

The first is Dick Van Dykes story of the day they were shooting the scene with the Child-Catcher on his horse drawn cart, and it went out of control. Sir Robert Helpmann, who played the Child-Catcher, had been a noted ballet dancer for forty years rather than actor and when the the horses galloped, he stayed on the cart, trying to steer it. When it rounded a corner and tumbled down a hill, he managed to jump on to the wagon itself, stepped across it as it tumbled underneath him, and landed gently on the ground without a scratch on him. As Mr Van Dyke put it "It was the most graceful damned traffic accident you ever saw"

The other is that Sir Robert Helpmann, though never an easy man to work with, was by all accounts wonderful with children, completely at odds with the Child-Catcher role. He was godfather to numerous children, and in one instance they were absolutely petrified when they saw their "Uncle Bobby" as the Child-Catcher, to the point of nightmares. Their parents phoned Robert up and asked him to reassure the kids that he was still their "Uncle Bobby". He agreed and when they were put on the line to speak to him he couldn't resist and actually said the "Lollipops! Ice-Cream! Chocolate!" to them. Cue more screaming in terror... You gotta a love a man like that! (I'm a firm believe that a little mindless terror is a healthy thing in a child's life)

So Pratchett was right about the Boogeyman being the Toothfairy?

He's every bogeyman-type character in folklore and fairy tales. Someone ought to post the two-page splash where he lists the various folk demons who are all really him.

Yes, just like Frau Totenkinder is every unnamed witch. And Prince Charming was every handsome prince.

I think I'm sensing a pattern.

You know, I wonder how many unnamed Fables in the homelands resent never getting to be a star, because those four have eaten up so many of the good roles....

He should've turned himself into a flea.

A harmless little flea.

And THEN put himself inside of a box.

And then put that box inside of another box.

And then put that box into ANOTHER box.

And then mail that box to himself!

And when it arrives...?

Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!

He SMASHES IT WITH A HAMMER!

...hm. This plan doesn't sound so good in theory, after all. =D

I want to go an listen to the Eartha Kitt number she never got to sing in the movie because they rewrote the story, but which they kindly included on the soundtrack.

You won't get it if you're just reading these 4 pages, but to anyone who's read the issue:

Has S_D totally warped my mind, or did the interaction between Dunster Happ and the Recruiter guy in the pages before the first one posted here seem... slashy? I was expecting the conversation to be one had during pillow-talk.

Same with the interaction between Dunster and the Boxer-commander who died while capturing Baba Yaga...

Please someone tell me "motto".
