Re: where to start
I think we're probably both right, really - these are issues which need to be addressed, but in being addressed, they cause problems of their own, and they may be being addressed for the wrong reasons, and blah blah blah - the situation gets ever more complicated. Still, one can't argue the original point which is that these problems, however small-scale and marginalized they may actually be, are still problems which need to be addressed. It's a delicate balancing act. A good comparison, I think, would be that of pedophilia - it certainly exists, and it's certainly a problem, but it's a much, much, much smaller problem than many people believe. The amount of actual, active pedophiles in the world is TINY, yet scaremongers have convinced many people that All Vaguely Suspicious-Looking Strangers Are Out To Rape Their Children. This has caused a massive breakdown of basic trust - if a small child is lost and crying, and you offer to help them find their mother, the mother's first reaction once she's been found is likely to be 'get away from my child, you monster!' This is all terrible, and yet... pedophilia DOES exist, and is a problem. The trick with these things is to try and solve them without somebody latching on to the problem as their personal crusade.
