While I understand that a retcon of origin is of great importance for fans, I think some of you are overdoing the Kreisberg-bashing.

Let's look at the issue:

-Black Canary single-handedly beats the menace-de-jour without the slightest problem
-BC's story is the first one
-BC gets to tell Ollie off in his own part of the book
-BC gets a grappling hook (and Kreisberg makes it so that she doesn't seem just like a lame Batman knock-off)
-BC survives the obligatory big explosion AND saves the villain at the same time

I think you can't just bite down on a writer just because he doesn't write your character the same way he or she was written when you started to like them.

'Sides: Ollie's cool in this, and I totally dig Cupid. Can't wait for the Cupid/Black Canary double feature.

That this is basically all their relationship has consisted of via Kreisberg is not actually a pro.

Well, I was using this more to point out that Black Canary gets the dominant role in the book in this issue. Though yes, there could be some more emotional and personal stuff, fo' sure.

'sides, in regards of Kreisberg not being a pro: He wrote "The Greatest Story Never Told" for Justice League Unlimited, one of my favs. So we know he CAN write really good stuff >_>

It wasn't a dig at Kreisberg's writing skills (though hell knows i could go on about that) so much as from pro et contra. You're list was full of pros, and I was arguing that one of them was more of a con.

-BC gets a grappling hook

Is it bad of me as an internet curmudgeon to kind of want to buy this issue in support for Black Canary always having a grappling hook?

Depends. Does it make me some kind of radical militant feminist for wanting to slap everyone who seriously believes that "She has a grappling hook?" is in any way a valid argument for negating "Her origin was retconned so that her mom's friend recruited her as a superhero rather than being reluctantly talked into doing it?"

Oh, don't get me wrong, I hate that...but there's so much I hate about what's been done to Black Canary in recent years...when I see something positive, like Dinah being written with tools...instead of not having a lockpick or having to jump off the side of a building to save a teenager because she's less equipped than Spoiler...it makes me kind of smile.

Slap whoever you like, though, I won't stop you. Unless you're going to try and slap me, then, well, I'll use my grappling gun to get out of your way. :)

Who said anything about negating anything? It's just a cool feature :)

I mainly put that list up to show that not everything is bad about Kreisberg's BC. I just read everywhere people constantly complaining that his version doesn't measure up to the version they fell in love with (Birds of Prey), which seems kind of unfair.

Is a bit like complaining about Bay's Transformer movies not being like the original cartoon.

biased and missing the point, but still

It's exactly like that, because Bay's Transformers is utter shit! >:(

Explain to me how Dinah being written as a controlling, emasculating shrew who is inexplicably jealous of the nutcase who is stalking her husband is empowering.

I just thought it's a nice scene, though I never said it's empowering. To me, one of her roles is putting Ollie in his place when he's being stupid, which she did here.

Except that their relationship has become such a joke at this point that ARGARRARGHRAGRHAGHAGAHRGHAGH
RAGE

Don't. Just don't even play like this is a good thing they're doing with them here.

Given that the menace-de-jour doesn't actually have any combat training (unless I missed that part of violin classes or engineering school that teaches you to fight people), any competent super hero should be able to beat this guy with one punch.

OK, there's a little bit of skill in dodging his sonic beam. But this should have been a quick fight.

Well yeah, I thought this could count as a pro because people were complaining about her accidentally getting in a hostage situation with that Dregz guy a few issues back.

Here she was being a competent superhero that delivered as expected.
