Blue Beetle - The Brave and the Bold 3
Last weekend I visited my first ever comics fair. I'd visited my friendly local comic shop to buy All-Star Superman, and the friendly person at the till asked how I was getting on with Blue Beetle (since I bought 4 trades from them). I mentioned that I had the 4 trades, and some later issues, but was missing some in the middle, so was waiting for the trades. "Have you tried the comics fair?" The comics fair? Why, there's one on today, they might have the issues.
What followed was less scary than I thought, but still rather disconcerting. If only because it wasn't as overwhelming as I thought, and the stallholders were so helpful.
Nobody had any of the issues I was looking for :( but they did pull up issue 3 of The Brave and the Bold (featuring Blue Beetle), which reminded me why I like Blue Beetle.
(Featuring 4 pages-worth from a 21 page story. The comic also features a 6-page The Batman story designed to advertise bubblegum O_o)
Sorry this image is wide, but I thought you needed the full effect. I love the way it uses the graphics on speech. I don't know if this is a Waid thing, or a Perez thing, or a more general thing, but it is something I've loved about the Blue Beetle comic; there's this sense that it isn't trying to be an illustrated text-story, or a representation of a film, that it is instead revelling in being a comic, making full use of the graphics at its disposal.
Again, the way speech is represented, but also the characterisation. I <3 Jaime, and I love the effect he seems to have on the superheroes he meets :)
And lastly, I kind of love the way it does things like this image. The gun is part of the main panel, but the frame also makes it a separate panel because we need to notice where it is. Not a technique you could really use in film, not simply illustrating a story, but telling it in a graphic.
Anyway, hope this illustrates part of why Jaime Reyes is so awesome, and the Blue Beetle comic was so awesome. Thank you Scans Daily for introducing me to it :) (and I really hope my lj-cut has worked)
