I think it was supposed to give the impression of a moldering corpse, all stripped down to the framework. You think THAT'S disturbing, watch 'The Three Caballeros' sometime, and pay close attention to the bit where the little kid gaucho is getting dressed. He has no such excuse - he's a perfectly healthy, chubby little kid, but he has an empty crotch. EMPTY! There's just a blank expanse of flesh; it's like he's wearing pants made of living skin or something. I'm getting the creeps just thinking about it.
