Amazing Spider-Man #600 Romita Sr. variant

Meh. I usually like Romita Sr but this isn't do anything for me. (And this isn't my anti-BND feelings, as I think the Ross cover is nice.)

That's the cutest May's looked since her short-haired stint with Jarvis. I've never been a fan of the "granny bun" look on her.

I think it might just be that everyone looks kind of placid. Yes, as they are trapped in Spider-Man's web of Xanax!

Man, that art's a real throwback. It's what the 60's/70's art would look like if it was produced with today's materials.

Some of it reminds me of the Freedom Force videogame.

Motto.

Which reminds me, I should post some of the Freedom Force comics.

They actually made Freedom Force comics?! Post them please!

I'd rather see 60s/70s art produced with 60s/70s materials.

Pretty bland. His cover for Daredevil a year or so ago was a lot better.

It's an okay cover, not as incredibly dated looking as the "Peter Brady" alt. cover he did early in BND. (Mary Jane looks particularly off for a cover by the guy who drew the famous "Jackpot" panel!) But thank God for an artist who knows what the Osborn hair is supposed to look like.

Mary Jane looks older here, maybe late 30s, early 40s. Do you think Romita is trying to tell us something?

It's plain, nothing as unique as say, his Daredevil cover.

Kinda bland. He should never be inked this delicately, or without a brush.

Carlie. She's a new character introduced in BND.

As others have said, a bit bland. But still classic.

I've noticed this trend in a lot of retro-looking covers and just some pretty bland modern pieces - the failure to match coloring with inks/pencils/style. You CANNOT give a Romita Sr some slap-on Photoshop layovers. Look at it! Basic gradiations, either lots of blur or improperly done layer work, and craptastic tonal values. Yes, in the past they had such color schemes but they fit because of the time. When you do a modern take, either you have to manipulate your PS skills to emulate the old graininess of the past, or find a new way to spin a classic artist like Romita Sr into something dynamic for the modern world.

It really pisses me off. Lazy, uninspired coloring is disgraceful. If Romita Sr did the coloring himself (unlikely) then he needs to get a damn good colorist. If it was someone else, if I were Marvel/Romita sr, I'd be hiring someone else.

Agreed. The coloring kills this, unfortunately. It's not really the art that's making it bland.

I would say that too. And it has all the visual dynamism beige can give.
