Doctor Who: Return to Vortis
A return of a lost post. This comes from issue #55 of the New Zealand Doctor Who zine Time Space Visualiser. TSV contains the standard mix of news, reviews, articles and fiction in 80+ A5 pages, including a mix of both ongoing and standalone strips that range from regulation action adventure to the heart breakingly whimsical. This particular one is an 8th Doctor story sequelling the 1st Doctor story Web Planet, done as a pastiche of Beowulf.
As is the custom of his personas, the Doctor offers to help. Someone calls him on having been responsible for awakening the monsters in the first place. Rather than denying it -- the antagonist fo the original story had actually snared the TARDIS as I recall, and in doing so sealed its own doom -- the Doctor simply says he's here to finish the job, leading to much rejoicing.
The Doctor stands alone against the rampage and sees the monster off with ye olde sonic screwdriver; it smashes through the roof in the process but not before he tags his foe with a bottle of Hai Karate. He and a bunch of warriors set off the next morning and eventually find themselves in a haunted swamp.
Everyone beats it back to the hall as night approaches and the planet's moons rise. As they reach safety, the sky is filled with skeletal forms and the Doctor takes a desperate gamble.
