The Batfamily Being Familial. With Some Dickishness.

I've been rereading Tomasi's run on NW, and I just like it so much. I think the story is exceptional--so many great moments. I know a lot of people have already read this, but thought I'd share one. I love the characterizations in this run.

From Nightwing 140. Written by Peter J. Tomasi, pencils by Rags Morales, inks by Michael Bain.

The story is great, but the art just kills it for me, which is sad because otherwise I would totally love this . . .

Wait, Dick Grayson is an Ovaltine man?

And as always, Alfred is prepared for anything.
The man runs a tight ship.

Of course Alfred is! He's clearly the greatest Gentlemen's Gentleman in the history of literature. Sure, Jeeves gets all the glory, but all he had to do was look after The Upper Class Twit of the Year.

::sniff:: Tim probably didn't bring any Ovaltine with him to Europe because his world is too grim for Ovaltine now. Dick and Alfred, use Tim's out-of-date map to chase him to Europe and make him eat zingers and drink Ovaltine with you! HUG IT OUT!!

I loved this run. Except for the art, which is hideous. But the feeling I love.

Am I the only one who likes the art? Granted, Bruce and Dick look a bit too Asian but I've seen so much worse. Timmy looks cute.

Tomasi is my happy place. They finally get the title working again after the string of disasters after OYL and then they cancel it. *sniffy sniff*

And oh, God I miss my boys being happy and close like this. *snuggles them* Tim's like, "I have the coolest big brother evah!" (which he does) and Dick's all co-conspiratorly with the kid. *sigh* *cries*

Because knowing Alfred, he has both stocked. (the only difference is the latter is more delivered than devoured)

Man, I honestly do *not* get the hate for the art.

Rags Morales packs more fluidity, humanity, and life into his characters than most artists out there, and Bain's inks in particular are really serving him well. Rags is honestly one of the best working artists in comics today, IMO!

Bruce being interrupted in the middle of his "We are family, we come first for each other" by the Batsignal is hilarious, if you're me. Oh, Bruce. You're married to that city. Don't try to pretend otherwise. This is where the word 'knight' gets most truthful.

Btw, where does Bruce's speech on family come from? Is he just being a dick for the sake of trying to guilt Dick into giving up on the jump? I'm not sure how I feel about Bruce's crossed arms of pater familias disapproval, either. (I find it funny because like Dick is going to let that stop him.)

Why does Bruce's face look like Black Adam?

Anyway, this is from the first trade right? How was that story? I wasn't sold with all that mother of Champions stuff with Talia. This bit is great though, I love Tomasi's writing on Nightwing, he one of the only writers who knows how to write a reaction to someone's death that isn't just angsty.

Oh, I miss them like this so much. Tim and Dick being adorable together. Bruce, who can't just say "Hey Dick, I'm worried about you because I love you" but manages to be un-dickishly dickish about it anyway. Dick, who gets it and is still comfortable enough to tease him a little. <3 So much love here.

I honestly wasn't expecting this to be posted. Cool!

Tomasi easily was the best writer on the Nightwing title and moments like this illustrate why. No pointless angst, no forced daddy issues that had preivously dealt with, no "waah Bruce doesn't think I can patrol the city on my own!". If Dixon or Grayson had been writing this Dick would have stormed out grumbling over how Bruce doesn't trust him to have his own base of operations. But, under Tomasi Bruce loves and respects Dick and Dick knows it. Not to mention Dick's relationship with Tim which was so unspeakably awesome in this run. After the current mess is over I want a Dick and Tim 12 issue road trip series written by Tomasi. I'll just have to settle with the BN tie-in for now.
