One Perfect Moment: Nightwing!Jason.
From 52 - World War III Part One: A Call to Arms, this is possibly the best insight into Jason's tenure as Nightwing. Violent, insightful but still maniacal.

Is it just me, or was that last panel a shout out to Joker lifting the crowbar to bludgeon Jason to death?

But still doesn't go any way to explaining why he'd opt to become Nightwing in the first place, still less with Dick's signature weapons.

I think it does, to a degree. I got the vibe of 'well, someone had to do it' from this, because they'd 'abandoned' the roles.

Pre Nightwing: Year One, when Bruce wanted to give Jason a compliment he told him how like Dick he was. Plus all the meta on replacements and graduations, and Jason taking Nighwting's identity because he's taking responsibility for what's happening, thus making him the good son, makes sense in Jason logic.

You said it much better than I did. Especially if he thinks Dick has moved on, then natural progression would seem natural.

Obsession with proving he can be the Bat son--a better one since the first one "abandoned" the quest? It almost seems to say something that it begs the question of why he doesn't be Batman instead since the cruise and cave were his ideas.

Does Jason know it was Bruce's idea? I'd think bonding as a family, most people would think it was Dick's idea.

I didn't see how he could, but since he makes a reference to a cruise and a cave I figure he must. I suppose the cruise might have been public record, at least, that Bruce left with Dick and Tim?

Yeah, that's what I thought so maybe he thought it was Dick abandoning Nightwing, as he's done about 3 times before?

Heh. Dick's got identity issues with Nightwing going back and forth; Jason keeps taking up different identities.

When does Jason miss an opportunity to blame Bruce? Jason basically thinks Bruce can do anything. He refused to think that Tim might have successfully stalked Batman, obviously Bruce knew and manipulated him, partly because he couldn't admit that Tim might be genuinely better than he himself was (thus justifying his fear that he wasn't good enough to be Robin).

Here he wouldn't bear thinking that Dick might've convinced Bruce to let go of the mission to spend time with family, when his attempt to get Bruce to make the mission less important than Jason ended in exploding buildings and Batman saving Joker's life.

Because until Bruce dies, Jason doesn't want to be Batman, he wants Batman's attention. He's competing with Dick and Tim for Bruce's attention, but Batman's identity is out of bounds.

Yeah, I think that's it--I just wonder if *Jason* knows that's it. Like all the Bat-sons he really does identify as a Bat *son* who focuses on getting Dad's attention/approval. Besides, he probably thinks he has to prove himself the best son before he could be the heir to Batman.

Yeah, but he's the one the most willing to take on the suit. He's been telling Bruce since Under the Hood that he's going to be Batman as he should be. And there's a scene somewhere (somewhen, I can't even remember if it was written post Jason's resurrection or not) where Bruce scolds him, along the lines of "If you want to be like me--" and Jason replies "precisely my life's goal".

I tend to think it's because he's written as having a personality more shaped by the time he became Robin. On the one hand he owes Bruce everything and the Robin he was was more Batman's than either Dick's or Tim's, on the other he already had a heavy history.

I have my doubts about Jason's self-awareness beyond "BRUCE DIDN'T LOVE ME".

ROTFL! That made me laugh. Go Jason. I love the way all the Robins are obsessed with getting Bruce's approval but all fear actually becoming him. Deep down they can all see he's crazy.

Yeah, that can cover a lot. But I sympathize. I love looking at exactly what Bruce gave the different Robins--as you say, Jason owes Bruce everything in a way the others don't. It's just different with all of them.

Excellent moment.

I love Tomasi's writing. Very much enjoy seeing Jason like this.

And I know it's wrong, because... it cannot be, but this just makes me wish even harder for Jason in his own book, being angry, going off on a finding Bruce/finding himself quest and Tim and Dick together right now.

I mean that it feels useless to want that as it's not happening any time soon and is quite different from what we're getting.

And yet, I would think there'd be a built-in market for something like that.

Why don't I own this issue, already?!

Never stop being awesome, Tomasi!

Jason Todd: blow dries his hair before kicking ass.

I wonder that the reference to that guy's kids doesn't even make him miss a beat though. Wasn't his father a hood who got killed working for Two-Face? Or am I thinking only of Batman Beyond here? Jason must know he's killing some kid's Dad.

Also, I know you've got identity issues, but STOP STEALING COSTUMES, JASON! It's your most annoying habit by far.

I don't know, cause it's awesome. I love Tomasi.

Nope, you're bang on, but Jason seemed to repress that pretty damn quick after trying to kill Two-Face for it. Then of course, he was betrayed by his mother and his 'daddy' in Bruce so maybe he's just not happy with parents at the moment.

Jason needs to find his own identity like WHOA.

Or at least go for a little variety and steal Batgirl's next! Or Huntress's. The one with the hotpants. Now that will distract the criminals.

Now that would be an example of Jim Lee's "creativity" put to good use.

If he's gunning to be Batgirl next, he should totally steal Babs' old costume with the yellow stilettoe boots.

Falsies and lipstick are, of course, mandatory.
