One Perfect Moment: Aquawoman
This is a character who has only appeared once, I think, but she is one of the most awesome characters.

Why, you ask?

Because of her ONE PERFECT MOMENT!

To anyone who says Aquaman is lame, I wouldn't know.
But Aquawoman?

She attacks.

Cities.

With GIANT SQUID MONSTERS!

OKAY. THIS AQUAMAN BASHING ENDS NOW, PEOPLE.

Look, no one's disputing the awesomeness of Aquawoman. That's fifty kinds of awesome right there. BUT. Arthur, people. The only reason you think he's a joke is because of frickin' SUPERFRIENDS. The truth is, if you piss Aquaman off, he will fuck your shit up.

Yeah but that's kind of the point isn't it? Most people tend to love Useless!Aquaman more than TOTALLYBADASS!Aquaman because the latter is as forced as they come. Seriously, it becomes a joke. It's like when I watch JLU and can't take their version of Aquaman seriously because they're trying so very, very hard to make people respect him, and it just feels like the script went:
Aquaman: Says something badass
*Aquaman does something badass
Aquaman: Something badass again.

It's why I love the Brave and the Bold Aquaman over any other interpretation. Is he awesome and can take the action? Heck yeah, but neither is he just a one-note character he tends to always become, he has his own distinctive and lovable personality.

I'll take that over "This character is not a joke. Look at the BADASS!" any day.

Well, that's a fascinating point, and you may be onto something there. But I don't know, Badass!Aquaman is usually actually received very well, in my experience. Well, and with surprise. "Wait, Aquaman can be badass! I HAD NO IDEA."

Like, you're literally the first person I've heard to dislike his JLU appearance as trying too hard. Everyone, as I recall, loved that Aquaman episode. They thought the show's version of the behanding was particularly badass.

In fact, while don't care for Aquaman's 90's bearded look, I've heard nothing but great, great things about that run written by he-who-shall-not-be-named. So yeah, I'm not sure people find badass!Aquaman "forced," per se. I think they enjoy it, and then promptly forget it, preferring instead to make fun of the guy who talks to fish along with the rest of pop culture.

At the same time, as I'm a lover of fun comics as well as badass, hardcore comics, I certainly enjoy seeing the Aquaman you describe. That actually might be the first step to people accepting him, if you build up to badassery there:

First you laugh at him, then you laugh with him, and then HE IMPALES A VILLAIN WITH A FUCKING TRIDENT WHILE RIDING A GODDAMNED SPERM WHALE BECAUSE HE'S FUCKING AQUAMAN KING OF THE SEAS YOU LANDLUBBING BITCHES.
