Chamber - Romance killer

Back before DMZ, Northlanders and Local, Brian Wood did some excellent character work on the final few issues of Generation X. I recall that the old scans_daily got a link from his blog when this was posted there and since it was requested and we seem to be having an unofficial Generation X week, here goes. From Generation X #71.

Jono is in the city with Monet and Jubilee and heads off on his own to a record store to browse the vinyl and, being the ladies man he is, someone catches his eye. He decides to approach her, but unfortunately his opening line doesn't go down too well:

They go to a coffee bar to chat, where Jono looks meaningfully at some coffee and pops the question: what's a deaf girl doing in a record store anyway. Rana explains that she was buying a present for her little sister's birthday and after leaving the coffee shop, the subject turns to Jono.

Rana gives Jono her address and asks him to write to her.

After Jubilee and Monet's car picks him up, Jono seems unhappy, despite meeting Rana and Monet calls him on it.

Also, I vote we make this an OFFICIAL GenX week.

I think the urge to both hug him and smack him around the head is the very core of any good Jono story.

This is very, very true.

It's even worse when that urge is followed by the realization that you've done the exact same thing yourself. ;(

And on that note I would like to officially add Generation X to my "Things I have bought because of SD list".

Gee Jono, it's not like you could talk to Scott, Warren, Hank, Bobby, Logan or just about any other resident of Xavier's School who ever had a non-mutant girlfriend and ask them how they've dealt with it.

I kinda liked that Monet doesn't have to be a mega-bitch all the time.

Because nothing bad ever happened to Warren or Logan's non-mutant girlfriends.

The last person you should go to for dating advice is Bobby.

That way lies maddness and stupidity of the highest order.

If only he could find someone that wasn't evil or crazy or likely hurt him.

"I kinda liked that Monet doesn't have to be a mega-bitch all the time."

Which is pretty much the entirety of the Generation X run. It's only Peter David that's decided that mega bitch to 90% of the people she meets is Monet's standard setting.

I feel really bad for both of them. Especially Rana. You have to imagine that anyone hearing impaired is dying for someone that they can easily communicate with.

How... how does she run like that in that skirt? In the panel after the kiss on the second last scan, all I can see is her doing a faceplant.

Call me cynical, but I'm kind of relieved for Rana. Sure, she'll be heart-broken, but superhero love interests have a nasty tendency to get killed. :/

Yeah, it's a great little story in that regard. Jono's a jackass but that doesn't stop him being right.
