It can only possibly not be offensive if you don't know what's being referred to.
I'm betting the vast majority of the readership won't have any idea about what's being referred to.
Yeah, I know about hysteria. I took a course on Victorian literature back in college, and damned if I didn't learn about a buttload of bizarre that beliefs people had about women in the dark ages you mention. Now this talk of hysteria and wandering wombs and such I saw in this thread is bringing back all sorts of memories. But since I did have to cast my mind back to college to understand what's so outrageous about this, I can't help but find the complaint about the "hysteries" and all its nasty connotations to be somewhat obscure.
Unless I'm just totally out of the loop here? That's certainly possible. Is "hysteria" a hot topic these days when people talk about gender politics?
