Your first point is lamentably very true, especially in Japan itself.
I wish I could easily have access to examples to prove my point, but most of them were on the old Scan_daily, which deflates part of my position I must admit.
However, one was a drawn out discussion trying to determine exactly what made manga different from other sequential art beyond artistic style--and even if that artistic style alone was enough to categorize it as its own thing as various Manga elements such as decompression are brought into western sequential art. I was arguing then for a differenciation, IIRC, but have settled on "It's all Sequential Art" position.
...God I wish I could find that discussion again.
And as far as I can see, the Audition example still holds firm. Then again, Horror films cover everything from A Nightmare on Elmstreet to Psycho.
So may I ask if you have any easily accesable examples for me to view? If not, that's fine.
