Bruce is a detective, why is he so dense sometimes?
It has been utteryly rare in recent years for Bruce to actually detect something on his own. Usually what is shown is Batman brutally beating or glaring information out of people. This has been parodied a couple of places (most notably Dr. McNinja's "What Would Batman Do?" gag: Batman would make a dramatic entrance through a skylight attacking everyone and screaming his questions, so that's what McNinja does in the next panel . . .)
I've hated that aspect of Batman. He's not just a detective, he's the WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE. That implies not just acute self-awareness but also an uncanny awareness of his surroundings and others. But Bruce has been an emotionally stunted, if not repressed, jackass for too long now, at least since Bane broke his back if not earlier. It's one of the reasons I hated the arc in Batgirl where Bruce discovers Cass had killed a man. Denial is not part of a successful detective's dictionary.
