Nice of you to knowingly and intentionally ignore my other sentence:
"[...] it'd be just as offensive to show a female character reacting so passively to her own violation, unless some sort of credible in-story justification was given for their behavior [...]"
Don't ever fucking twist my words like that again. I volunteered as a rape counselor of years, and I find it personally offensive to be accused of engaging in victim-blaming.
And credible in-story justification was NOT given for this. Now, to be fair, I said above that I don't buy that Dick would break under these circumstances, but I'll admit, this was incorrect, because I realize what I meant was that I instead DIDN'T BUY OFF ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES THEMSELVES. It was like when William Messner-Loebs, during his Flash run, tried to show Wally West turning into a homeless bum in a SINGLE DAY, in a SINGLE ISSUE - these are people who have HUGE support networks, so the ONLY way it works is for EVERYONE involved to be either completely stupid or sociopathically insensitive.
I love the "so easily", by the way.
I stand by this, because if anyone who knew or purported to care about Dick had demonstrated possession of either a brain or a heart, at any time during this whole saga, it would have ENDED. The ONLY reason everyone behaved in the horribly out-of-character ways that they did was because Devin Grayson was imposing Writer's Fiat.
If a male writer had shown a longtime costumed crimefighter like Black Canary reacting this way - not fighting back, not protesting, not even MOVING - they would have been accused of HOLY SHIT MISOGYNY, and rightly so.
