I think I prefer this version to the Tales from the Crypt show's.

Saw it coming, but then, so would pretty much anyone.

Anyway, the Vault Keeper's warning is well taken: a woman's face will tear right off if you pull on it. Luckily they tend to come off neatly and in one piece, so that they can easily be reattached, what with out modern face transplant surgery and all.

I saw the "It's her real face" ending coming the moment I saw the preview pic. Not the face-ripping though...

Which is EXACTLY why it works.

I love how sometimes EC would misdirect you with their twists, making you think it's so obvious and then going, "Well duh, of course we know you know, but did you see THIS coming?!"

Reminds me of a text Batman/Joker story (Tales of Batman? Tales of the Joker) where as part of his plot, the Joker kills a couple of rich eccentrics by cutting their faces off on live TV, but does it so he's facing the camera and the victim is strapped to a chair facing the Joker, so the viewing population don't see anything specific but it's left to their imagination with the sound effects.

And then, with ghastly mental imagine playing in their heads, the Joker peels the face off and tucks it nonchalantly into his suit pocket like a handkerchief.

At that point I think I threw up in my mouth a little, damn this imaginative minds eye of mine!

'The Further Adventures of the Joker' is what you're thinking of. Great anthology. I was reminded more of another entry in that, the one called 'Masks', where - and I'm doing my damnedest not to give anything away to those who haven't read it, 'cause it's a damn fine read - the Joker unmasks the Batman - and then the Batman gets back at him by UNMASKING THE JOKER... Brrrr.

I was kind of hoping for a more Cupid & Psyche (role reversal) ending, but I guess that wouldn't exactly be in keeping with entire 'Vault of Horror' thing.

Okay, I've always wondered ever since I read this in 1986: can you really pull a whole face off with your fingers? Also, if he dug in his hands hard enough, wouldn't the fact that it's flesh be apparent pretty quick, like with the first sight of blood? I realize they're supposedly being restrained here(which is a little fucked up, given how far they're already going here), but just one puncture of the skin would have been enough to do that.

It's a pretty clumsy ending, but this is just Grand Guignol, no more. I wonder how much of a subconscious influence this later had on Tobe Hooper.

That said--with all that, you almost don't notice how openly sexual they managed to get in this story, at least for the 50s. (and NICE BOD on the crone, almost Wally Wood-ish)

No, I didn't see precisely that coming either. I figured she was going to announce specifically, while cackling, that she was a real witch and carry him off screaming on her broomstick or some such. But I might've been thinking of the cover story in MAD #2.
