Current mood: contemplative
Entry tags:char: aquaman/orin/arthur curry, char: black canary/dinah lance, char: flash/barry allen, char: green arrow/oliver queen, char: green lantern/hal jordan, char: martian manhunter/j'onn j'onzz, creator: barry kitson, creator: brian augustyn, creator: mark waid, publisher: dc comics, title: jla year one

How the JLA got its name (!?)
I can never quite figure out if this story is in continuity or not. I suspect that it isn't, but I like it, so it's part of my own personal canon.

Scans are from Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn's 'JLA: Year One,' available through most online retailers! Get your copy today!

Basically the below pictured heroes united to defeat a fierce foe and decided 'Hey, let's form a team!' The following is the resulting press conference to announce their new team status.

I love that both Canary and Hal are really digging the attention. Poor Arthur though, he somehow manages to seem more awkward and out of place than J'onn.

I'm sorry that Canary's speech bubble kind of got cut off there. I'll probably rescan and upload it later, in the meantime if you can't make it out let me know and I'll type out the text.

Multiple villains arrive, they fight, blah, blah, blah... Afterward Canary is a little tense for various reasons, and Barry, well meaning lug that he is, simply adds to her bad mood.

Photobucket

Hal: 'Wheee, I'm an attention whore!'

They run into a rather aggressive reporter and Ollie makes an appearance.

Yes, yes, Ollie...very phallic. We're all very impressed.

Jumping ahead a bit, Killer Shark is breaking into Kord Industries with the intention of, I dunno, stealing the tech in order to take over the world or something, when three members of the Justice League make the scene. Canary takes the lead, but Barry is too much of a gentleman for his own good.

Well, he is very pretty.

Also, I don't hate the Green Arrow/Black Canary pairing as much as some, but am I totally off base in thinking that she seems to have more chemistry with just about EVERYONE (male and female) else?

In any case, I'm not posting the Ted Kord bits, since I saw them multiple times at scans_daily ver. 1.0. Besides, I only posted this because I suddenly suffered a wave of nostalgia for Barry and Hal as written by Mark Waid.

While I agree that it makes sense given the context of Year One some might argue that she STILL has more chemistry with other individuals than Ollie. Especially since Ollie continues to come off as a cocky and inconsiderate jerk, even to Canary, and those brief flashes of the decent man inside don't always make up for it.

Though I do admit that when they're 'on' as a couple they are really on. Ollie probably just needs more consistent writers.

That being said, I wish it was still in continuity that Ollie was secretly funding the JLA from day one. That was an utterly awesome idea on Waid's part and totally fits Ollie to a T.

Agreed.

Ollie and Dinah could both use more consistent writers. Dinah's been suffering more recently but Ollie has been consistently out-of-character for several years now in most of his appearances.

That only times I can remember either of them coming off as they should be anytime in recent memory was when Gail Simone featured Ollie in Birds of Prey and the wonderful little scenes in Final Crisis where Ollie complains about being drafted and the later moment in which Ollie sacrifices himself to the Anti-Life forces to cover Dinah's escape.
