Runaways vol. 3 #9
Three scans from Terry Moore's last issue.

The Staff of One's upgrades are a little deadly.

And later...

Thoughts on this issue, or Terry Moore's run as a whole? I personally fall into the "intially excited, inevitably disappointed" camp. Here's to the new team.

Can it be? Chase... NOT looking like a girl?

I'm in shock.

Exactly how does the Staff of One come back into play? Nico's been using the Witchbreaker's Staff since the end of Whedon's run, and Ramos' and Miyazawa's art has reflected this too.

Also, Chase's comments at the end completely fall flat for me and clearly display that Moore had no grasp on this book or the characters. Being heroes is probably the furthest thing from the minds of these kids. I thought it was meant to be ironic that in trying to distance themselves from their parents whilst patrolling LA, they actually became more like them and had to actively fight that, too. But I never thought any of them would want to actually be 'heroes' per se, or would call each other that..

That's how I feel, too. I could see some of the Runaways choosing a life of heroism, maybe, when they're much older. But right now? They're really just normal kids with powers trying to make up for their parents' mistakes. I don't think they want to be heroes at all. And they're not encouraging each other to live that kind of life -- which is what Chase's remarks suggest.

You know, except Molly came up with costumes, has bugged to go out on patrol and even came up with a theme tune. Chase giving her encouragement to become a superhero, which is clearly her dream? I think that's kinds of awesome.

Okay, you're right. I'd forgotten about Molly showing plenty of signs of wanting to be a superhero. And I do like the idea of Chase encouraging her.

It's still kind of weird that he's including Klara, though. To be fair, I don't think we have any clear idea of what she wants to do with her life, but still...

The clearest view of Klara that I've got is that she's pretty much Molly's partner in crime and goes along with whatever she wants/does, so I thought it made sense in the context too. She seems too nervy to have a clear idea of what she wants and from the characterisation of I've got of her so far she seems the type who goes along with more dominant personalities. In this case, she could do a lot worse than having a role model like Molly.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Really? You got all that?

'Cause all I got was, "little girl that is completely interchangeable with Molly."

Klara is a new character that desperately needs characterization of her own, and Moore completly dropped the ball. Looking at her, you would never know that she was from a hundred years ago.

I mean, there was even an interview with Ramos where he said that Klara was basically a small adult, while Molly's still a kid, and it sounded like they would have an interesting dynamic, and it just didn't happen here.

That's how I took that bit. I thought it was one of the nicer moments in Moore's run. Though someone on this team (I can't remember if it was Moore or Ramos) described Chase as "the next Captain America" and I was like, wat.

(Reply to this) (Parent)

Well, it would be...

If it weren't for the fact that it's, like, totally NOT.

Molly DID have an infatuation with superheros, yes, but she was cured of that when she punched Wolverine out of a freaking building. Molly and her friends even fought the X-Men when they came to take her away, so Molly calling them "teh graetest heroes EVAR" is pretty damn out of character for her.

See, this is where I think Moore failed - he didn't seem to realize that at heart, Runaways is a teen book, not a superhero book.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the Witchbreaker staff _was_ the Staff of One, just redesigned, with a new makeover thanks to Nico's grandmother's alterations. Occasional reversions to the original design mostly just being accidents.

That was my understanding as well. Nico didn't take the Witchbreaker's staff (because that would totally fuck up the time stream), her torture by her ancestor simply made Nico and her staff more powerful. The Staff of One evolved and that evolution included a dragon.

I think the point Chase was making was not that the girls will be superheroes, but that they will be a new TYPE of superhero in the future; less striking dramatic poses in costumes, more... using their powers in their lives as they go along, but using them to help people too.

Well, it's how I always wanted to see the MU go, heroes without costumes because they're not heroes they're people with powers, and as yet the closest we've had is Iceman's brief career as an accountant and possibly Lila Cheney's music career.

You know, I always wanted Bobby to stay out of the X-Men, and to have occasional, accidental adventures with Cecila Reyes. I would so read the story of ER Doctor and Accountant (Sometimes They Fight Crime). Hank would guest star regularly, natch.

Remember Topher from the first arc of the book? Well, turns out his vampire species is a variant of the Sparkly vampires from Twilight, only instead of sparkly they're shiny.

So basically everyone is a Shiny vampire and they just refuse to acknowledge it.

Also: Random dragon attack FTW.

Miyazawa has always played the part of fill-in particularly well. His first Cloak and Dagger two-parter was excellent.

But yeah, the quality of the book has taken a pretty steep nosedive since Vaughan and Alphona ran away. The characters just don't feel the same, and the art hasn't been nearly as good. There's nothing as visually impressive as all of Nico's different clothes and styles or the horde of fairies that harassed Vic in these two most recent runs.

God, yes. He even had a good sense of style! What they were wearing was stuff people actually wear. And everyone had different body types and proportions, and it was just so damn pretty =D.

He was supposed to be the artist for SMLMJ Season 2, y'know.

That first page is the ideal resolution to ANY plot.

I haven't read this yet, so I have no idea if there's any foreshadowing that the staff could do that, but I think I prefer my version where the bad guy's gloating about how he's won and then a dragon eats him for no reason.

And also I like to think the reaction in that last panel is "confusion", because the closest to a facial expression I get from that is the :3 smiley, except in reverse, like, 3: - a cat frown?
