And didn't they start that retcon really soon after his death?
It just drives me crazy because the way he died in the two versions give a totally different meaning to his story. In the retcon--and because of this I understand why the writers prefer it--Jason's death is totally on Bruce. As the adult who put Jason into this role pretty quickly, Bruce really was responsible for ignoring personality issues that could have gotten him killed. It made more sense for post-death Bruce angst to have the guy trying to deny just how selfish and irresponsible he'd been with this kid.
But in the real version, Jason essentially dies because of something all these guys could relate to: his love of his mother. The only thing that makes poor Jason different is that his mother--unlike the Mamas Drake, Wayne, Grayson and original!Todd--is evil and doesn't love him. That death would have a totally different meaning to the rest of them because they all share the same weak spot.
