Point, but I've always thought the weakness of answering machines was that they're vulnerable during a power outage, so that's why I'd never use one. With the big temblors we get in San Francisco, it's not unheard of to lose power as a result. (Not to mention the incompetence of our local utility company; during the rolling blackouts a few years ago in the western United States, we went half and full days without power.)
