Entry tags:char: black canary/dinah lance, char: green arrow/oliver queen, publisher: dc comics, title: green arrow/black canary

I miss Birds of Prey.
From this week's GREEN ASSHOLE/INCOMPETENT LASS.

In issue 19, Dinah saves Ollie, and then punches him for tazing her. Awesome, you might say! Finally, Dinah gets some respect!

Um.

...

Did she just....

And then the bad guy gets away, because for some reason it takes both Dinah and Ollie to minister to Merlyn after Cupid cuts his throat, and one of them can't just run after her and take her ass down.

The split format GA with Canary backups cannot come fast enough.

You know, the excuse could have been "I'd shatter your wrist" and it would have actually worked. It still wouldn't have made much sense (why not just Cry the chain?) but at least it wouldn't have diminished her.

Not wanting to shatter Ollie's wrist makes a *lot* more sense. If we can think of that, why couldn't anyone who worked on this comic?

I'm pretty sure that whole vapid, brainless, "die for/with my beloved" speech made me retch too, though not for the same reason.

And oh god, one of my favorite superheros just reminded me of The Awful Book About Abusive Sparkly Vampires Twilight. I think I need to go kill myself now...

The first Crisis took away her years on the JSA, and split her into two different characters. Okay, fine, made some sense.
ICk and Final Crisis have apparently BONGed away her role as a founding member of the JLA. It was a nice consolation prize since they took away half her career with Crisis (and frankly it makes sense that she'd be a JLA founder), but it's different from what some people remember so it has to go. And take away her competence while you're at it.
Next big event will probably take away her time on the BoP. And the one after that will retcon her out of existence entirely.

Also, I don't have a copy of issue BOP #60, but Dinah had Scott Free make her a set of lock picks to hide in her gloves after the Savant debacle. She should have everything GA does.

You know, I just have to say, it's kind of sad when my Black Canary "damsel in distress" commission leaves BC better equipped than the actual comic. WOW!

She played a more crucial role in defeating Cupid than Ollie did.

It's not like she's being portrayed as an incompetent damsel-in-distress who needs Ollie to rescue her.

Ugh, now I'm scared to go to my LCS tomorrow. Between this and Oracle it does not look like a week of quality writing. And yes, I do buy this drivel because I like both characters and want DC to know that and not cancel the only book that has them regularly appearing now that BoP is gone.

I like Green Arrow and I like Black Canary. I've read all of the modern run GA stories and am working my way through the 1989 Grell run. I've read a lot of BoP (though would always like some recs for more...) and I think both characters have their flaws and their strengths and I think that when done right they are truly awesome together.

But in the GA/BC run I wonder if any of the writers have ever read any of the books with GA and BC. Ollie: not always a insensitive asshat. Dinah: NOT (ever) a damsel needing to be rescued. In fact there have been several instances in the GA books where Ollie admits that Dinah is the better fighter and respects her more for it. It's my hope that the new Green Arrow stories with the Black Canary backups will get back to the true characters. But I'm not holding my breath.

Until then I'm going to reread Kevin Smith or Brad Meltzer's run on GA. Or watch JLU for some truly awesome Ollie/Dinah interaction.

Oh for the love of...

If the Cry gets in the way of Kreisberg telling his pathetic 'plots' (and I am aware that I am stretching the meaning of the word to shattering point there, but bear with me), why doesn't he just PULL OUT THE PHLEBOTINUM to make her lose the Cry momentarily?

Or she could have been hit at the throat at an earlier point and that could have made her use of the Cry less accurate than usual - that's already happened.

It still wouldn't be perfect, but it'd be less lolWHAT inducing than this.

On the subject of characterisation, I'd have thought that Dinah's little bluff might have been more Ollie's style than hers, but my perception of the characters admittedly owes a lot to JLU. The content of the bluff, in any case, doesn't so much sound like something Ollie would say.

Wow, it's rare to see this much hate on someone's work, though I can't disagree. I'm so fed up with hack writers who seemingly couldn't care less about the characters they write, and don't even do thew flipping research before writing them! It's horrendous, and after the Adam Beechen hackfest fiasco I'm thinking they should do mandatory tests on these people to see if they even know what's going on.

Is it wrong that I find that pool ball bit to be one of the worst examples of comic book science ever? Sound does not work that way. Shiva would have a hole in her hand if the ball was hit with enough force to shatter it that badly. Does she just generate forcefield that directs the sound where she wants it to go and stops it? I know it might serve the character well, but sound waves aren't a precision weapon. It's like using a fire hose to soak a sponge and being surprised when other things get wet.

The trick to makeing superheros relatable is not to make them incompetent!

Superhero is bad with computers = relatable and human.

Superhero is bad at being a superhero = get this dangerous person off the street!

Saveing the day the majority of the time is a requirement unless your live in the Venture Brothers Universe.

See, I was more concerned about how it took three whole pages for Dinah to succumb an unarmed unpowered women with absolutely zero combat training. I mean, yes, BC was probably having to use a lot of self control not to knock her unconscious with one blow, but it did seem a bit like she was just taking the time to knock the snot out of a relatively defenseless woman.

And don't get me started on the uzipped ugly-ass slapfight on the cover.

That bothered me.

So did the fact that Dinah is now apparently having trust issues with Ollie... totally rehashing something that was not only reconciled (badly, but still reconciled) right before the wedding but which has already been explored back during the Mike Grell days.

Ditto Ollie and Dinah growing ever uncomfortable with his dark side and the hunter within (so to speak)... even though he and Dinah have both killed in the line of duty before in... oh, take a wild guess.

10:1 we won't see either Ollie or Dinah doing the realistic thing and visiting a shrink either...
