Northstar! Special Returning Character!

Four scans from Uncanny X-Men #508, featuring surprisingly tolerable art from Greg Land.

In our first scene, we drop in on Jean-Paul Beaubier/Northstar, currently living it up as a sports superstar

If anyone's temperament says "Chief Operating Officer", it's Aurora.

So, is Aurora coming too?

Anyway, elsewhere, Red Queen and co. have stolen Kwannon's body, and it turns out they've also got Psylocke (apparently now back from the Exiles):

There are two different interpretations of this scene in circulation:  the first, that they reanimated Kwannon's body (which used to be Psylocke's) and transferred Psylocke's mind into it, or they reanimated Kwannons body and used Psylocke's lifeforce to resurrect Kwannon (thus, by implication, killing Psylocke).

Regardless, doubtless Psylocke will be alive by arc's end, and in her standard Asian body, since that's the one they make all the action figures of (and all adaptations of the character use).

From the first preview that I saw of Land's art, I thought "that looks surprisingly tolerable for Greg Land"; and, having read the whole issue, that still holds. He's still a bad artist and lazy thief to boot, but he didn't ruin the issue; I'm still using the "thief: greg land" tag, though.

For Land, this is tolerable, although there's still way too many posed panels and celebrity references - Wolverine in particular looks like Christina Bale with some mutton chops and a little extra hair thrown in.

As for Psylocke, I'm a little concerned. Fraction has shown he can throw all the eggs out of the basket, but not necessarily in a good way (Definitely not fond of his work in Iron Man), but at the same time, Psylocke is a fan favourite, and to kill her off to bring Kwannon back would be more than a little WTF.

He's mostly managed to keep his faces consistent here, which is a huge step on the road towards average.

Christina Bale?

I'm not really seeing it.

Thief, I'll grant you. He's a good artist, though, which just makes his laziness and poor composition due to over-reliance on porn reference and the like more frustrating. And the stolen photo-referencing exacerbates the problems, because he can't compose a scene anymore when he has thirteen different poses from eighteen sources, all of which clash!

. . .

If he'd stop tracing, his art skills would improve.

Well, there aren't a huge number of mutants left.

Of course, Surge and Cannonball are both really fast (though Cannonball is a less surgical way), so, again, maybe it is a PR thing.

How many other superspeed flying mutants are there?

Of course, the problem is they've NEVER had a flying speedster on their teams before.

Quicksilver's only X-team membership was the Government funded X-factor and he can't fly, whereas Cannonball can fly fast but hasn't got superspeed otherwise.

Heh, tag "thief: greg land". Also, "teef: greg land".

"Canadians gotta stick together, yeah?", "...we wantcha...", "killin'", "y'know". Someone needs to be sentenced to watching several hours of Don Cherry and Bob & Doug McKenzie (Clockwork Orange style) so that they realize how un-Canadian Wolverine's dialogue is.

Can one get good poutine in San Francisco?

Wolverine needs to raid La Banquise. Their current menu. Om nom nom.

All right, bitching first:

1) Land. Dammit.
2) Fraction, last we saw, Northstar was already hanging with the X-Men post-reset button. Pay attention.
3) I miss the ears.
4) Logan still needs his ass kicked for leaving Northstar with SHIELD.
5) The caption boxes still make me wanna swat someone. They're not even that bad anymore, it's just an automatic response by now.

But on the other hand:

1) Northstar has a boyfriend. Fucking finally. (Step away from the pun, people)
2) There will eventualy be Northstar as drawn by Dodson.
3) Aurora seems to be over her crazy. God help us, she might get some actual character development if she hangs around.

I think the good outweighs the bad in this case.

Hrmm. Okay, thus far I've liked the writing to an extent. The Domino bit was amusing but I think Fraction's Domino is, well, too happy?

The art isn't as bad as Land's usual shite. Some things are just odd (I keep feeling like I'm looking at the cover of a Gap winter catalog or something with Northstar and boyfriend). I'd be really happy to see Aurora join as well.

Bondage, corsets, and oddball resurrections, are we sure this isn't Claremont?

"Your new home" and "Your new body" do not sound like what you'd say if you restored someone to their original body. My guess is that it's going to be some kind of scam, trying to convince the X-Men this is Betsy and it isn't.

Or, you know, Fraction is just that hackneyed and doesn't realize that restoring Psylocke to her british form IN NO WAY MAKES HER A LESS CONFUSING CHARACTER at this point. Seriously, I realize that British Betsy was a more well-rounded character, and that Claremont has written Asian-Betsy horribly for decades now, but another bodyswitch really doesn't undo that.

It would make for good comedy if Betsy was really switched back and was appaled to find herself a somewhat dumpy, unathletic British girl instead of the sex symbol ninja she's used to by now. I figure there'd be a very long "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" involved ;)

While it was nice to see gay characters getting actual pagespace, did nobody else find it problematic that Emma told Kurt his job was "jumping around like a spastic"? I wanted to like this issue, but that really soured me.

While it's nice to see Northstar being used at all, and even cooler to see him with an actual boyfriend for what may be the first time ever, I'm still really disappointed in this scene. While I'm glad to see any character get page time in this book who isn't Emma Frost, Cyclops or Colossus, there's a difference between using B-List characters and using them well. JP really just seems like a simplified caricature of himself.

I mean really this scene is pretty damn boring and it seems to drag on even more so than with usual decompressed writing. it could have been told in a lot less space. And the art while tolerable is really distracting in some parts.

The reasoning for his rejoining is very weak, it's not like the X-men don't have speedsters. Like colonel_green said both Surge and Cannonball are generally very fast, and once Hellion was able to fly from Texas to the Mansion fast enough that he was accompanied by a sonic boom. While none of them are as fast as JP, they'd be good enough. Heck Nightcrawler should be good enough. And why do they even need a speedster? I thought the reason they were losing against Empath was because he was psychically dominating them, not because he was outrunning them.

I just can't help but think that the reason Fraction is using Northstar has less to do with actually liking the character himself and more to do with fanservice, which would be fine if I believed that this would lead to JP being used as anything more than wallpaper once this arc is over.

He's just going to stand around and look pretty, not really getting much character development.

Also insulting Alpha Flight is in really bad taste considering the team was brutally murdered as cannon fodder for a mediocre villain.
