HOT STUFF, THE LITTLE DEVIL

The first appearance of Hot Stuff was in "Hot Stuff" #1, October 1957. Harvey must have had confidence with its new character, since he didn't first appear as a backup feature in another title or have a trial run in "Harvey Hits".

Whoa, dancing devil girls are pretty risque for Harvey Comics which was never, as I recall, much of a T&A source. (Unlike Archie Comics which, despite being aimed at the same demographic of preteen kids, has featured rather a lot of cheesecake.)

So, is that good or bad?

'Cause I'm sure I could dig up one 'o those BETTY AND VERONICA SUMMER FUN SPECIAL comics they used to do every year.

They still do those?

This is scans_daily: do you really have to ask? ;-)

I don't think I've ever seen this comic before, but it's all... strangely familiar. 0_o

CUTE DEMONS?

You have reminded me that kid's comics at one time were bizarrely subversive, and not in companies you'd expect.

Actually, if you were really hardcore-religious you could claim that Harvey Comics are all a plot to first enslave our young psychologically to material goods and wealth, almost as fetish objects(Little Dot, Richie Rich), in order to lead them to witchcraft and the occult(Wendy, Casper) and eventually to their Satanic lord and master, the devil for children, Hot Stuff.

Though I'm an agnostic, so it's not an argument I'd make. But it is interesting how often Harvey takes things that are usually scary and makes them cute. Devils, witches, ghosts and their murderers(well, what else were those three adult ghosts?), and enormous, retarded ducks.

Living in an era when some religious leaders warn the public that Harry Potter leads children to experiment with witchcraft, debauchery, and Satanism, my first thought is that seeing these would make their heads explode. My second thought is that they would just say aha, we knew it all along!

The diaper always bothered me: it looked like Hot Stuff must be incontinent.

Really? I always took it as a reference to the "Summoner's Tale."

So the diaper was to make sure he didn't leave embarrassing friars all over the place?

So the baby devil sits on his grampa devil's lap in order to put out distressing fires? Hot Stuff would learn later in life that when they 'twitch' as they so quaintly put it, you just have to hold on!

While this may seem a bit hypocritical of me, given all my rants about Harvey comics, I actually kinda like Hot Stuff. Unlike most of the Harvey characters, he actually has personality - true, that personality is usually set on 'cranky', but that's a hell of a lot better than being set on 'sappy'. And just the concept of a fire-breathing demon who also happens to be a cute kid has enough spice to it to intrigue me. Also, I like how the devils have flames instead of hair - it's quite an interesting visual. (And note that, unlike Casper's uncles and Wendy's aunts, Hot Stuff's relatives are perfectly normal people - his grandpa is clearly a little belligerent at times, but whose isn't?)

He CUSSES! I realize that might not seem like much, but remember you'd give Harvey Comics to 5-8 year-olds.

And I would agree that "cranky" is better than "so unbearably smug he should never stop being punched in the face", i.e. Richie Rich.

Did anyone here ever see Dan Clowes' take on Harvey, "Playful Obsession?"

No? Well, then, look:

Heh heh - I found that far more amusing than I thought I would. I don't generally go for that sort of parody - it's a bit too barbed for my taste - but in this case it was so spot-on that I couldn't help laughing. Little Octagon - hee hee!
And I wouldn't actually call Richie Rich 'smug', per se - just irritatingly goody-two-shoes. A change of costume is the only real difference between him, Casper or Wendy - they even all have the exact same face and body type. It's freaky.
