A Different Kind Of Chick Tract.....

What with the Passover/Easter season upon us, you might be seeing more Chick Publications conversion tracts than usual.
I highly doubt that anybody will be out passing this particular one around (although somebody probably should).

That's not Jack Chick, the art's way too good and I coud never envision Chick being a psychonaut. I'd pass this around, though.

I remember this from somewhere. Clever.

A minor nitpick: The pamphlet claims that LSD helped "cure" Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson. That sounds doubtful. Alcoholism, even today, isn't yet a curable condition. Treatable, yes, but not curable in the sense of making alcoholics able to drink moderately and safely. That's why those who've managed to stay off alcohol often refer to themselves as being "in recovery."

Also, while I'm not a knee-jerk "Drugs are bad, mmkay" type, and agree that hallucinogens such as LSD do have therapeutic potential and research on them should be less prohibitive, I do think that works like this tend to gloss over the hazards of taking such drugs without medical supervision. Yes, it's true that the whole "LSD will make you think you can fly and jump to your death" bit is a silly myth based on a single incident, but there have been people who have suffered permanent psychological damage from taking psychedelics. This tends to be either denied or hand-waved by the "All drugs should be readily available to everyone, everywhere" advocates, every bit as much as the potential benefits of LSD are denied by the "Throw every drug user in jail" types.

This one at least kind of touched on it

Yeah, it's my opinion that though such hazards exist they do not excuse the War on Some Drugs in any way, shape, or form. Arguing that I might possibly abuse some drug and suffer thereby? We know that Prohibition does not work; why keep trying it?

there have been people who have suffered permanent psychological damage from taking psychedelics.

Look at the toll taken by our highways lately? This statement of yours here is not a reason. The fraction of people who will abuse drugs and hurt themselves is negligible compared to the risks we all endure every day as a matter of course. And the potential benefit is extraordinary.

I don't dispute either of those points, which is precisely why (apologies if my previous comment was unclear) I think that LSD should be legal, but only when prescribed by, and used under the supervision of, a qualified professional. I do not, however, think it wise to make it available in the way that alcohol is available (or that marijuana, which is arguably less harmful than alcohol, should be available).

Well, we're getting to the point where you will only be allowed to smoke tobacco in special areas (tobacco: also a god-plant!) so maybe the recreational drugs will get their space there.

This reminds of those things where people talk about all the wonders of hemp.

Eh, I spend all my money on books and videogames and clay, anyway. Also stormtroopers. I don't have time for a drug habit!

It was interesting to find that "psychedelic" apparently means "mind manifesting", though.

I think that we should concentrate on what's important here, which is that I have a new userpic.

Hee! I initially misread your comment as "Hoffman's bike is now a museum in Amsterdam." Which means that either someone has dosed me with acid, or that I really should go to bed.
