When Harley was Batgirl
One from the old S-D...

Harley doing what she does best, proof that Cass can be expressive behind that mask, and Tim getting molested! What more can you ask for?

Once again, it's the team of Kesel and the Dodsons.

Harley's having a problem. Bad guys are targeting her. She's just had to take down Killer Croc, and knows more will be after her. What will our heroine do?

As she's thinking about this, a bat flies to the window. It's a sign. She announces, "I shall become a bat." One of her henchmen, Matches Malone, is rather alarmed at this, for some reason. She sets on her mission to strike terror in the Underworld, especially the ones nosing too close to her hideout. She drops Croc with the cops (literally) and they call in that Killer Croc was just dropped off by Batgirl. This gets Barbara's attention, and she contacts Cass for confirmation...

Tim makes the distress call. Dick's on his way. Babs asks what the situation is. Tim says it has to do with...

Harley slips off when the chaos ensues.

Babs finds Harley's hideout, and sends Dick, Tim, and Cass. Batman is already there, as we see here...

http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/25954.html

Babs wishes she could go with them, one more time. She doesn't want the last person to wear her costume to be Harley Quinn.

As the story concludes, she needn't have worried.

And so, it's off to Metropolis.

Since, Clayface has worn the costume. Between Harley and Selina, I wouldn't be surprised if Holly Robinson's worn it a few times, too. :)

Scans from Harley Quinn #10-12. #12 was 31 pages.

Is Ives wearing make-up at the end there, or can she shift her skin color or . . . huh?

Her skin is green. She's wearing flesh-colored makeup while in the Batgirl costume.

Dick is so great in this. The "I'm wearing a mask" line is fantastic, particularly in combo with the facial expression, and I love that he's a hundred times more furious about Harley in the Babsgirl suit than Babs herself.

It's six kinds of hilarious that Harley and Ivy just happen to have an original recipe Batgirl suit hanging around for play, though. Because, you know, that legacy needed to be gayer. XD

Of course, it did. :)

And Dick and Tim before they got all brooding. Putting this together made me feel surprisingly nostalgic. Except for one thing...

I never payed attention to it until now, but Cass's old outfit... The pouches. She looked so... '90s. Notice she shifted to a normal utility belt, eventually. :)

I think the belt/pouches on Cass' old outfit worked, at least originally, because of the sort of energy and style that Daimon Scott had going when he was drawing her.

To me, it was stylistically brilliant that this small bundle of awesome fighting prowess was clad entirely in black but at the same time had these huge yellow pouches that made her the most obvious target. Not that anything could hit her, of course. But I liked it when Scott drew it, others never seemed to have the right approach to it. The 1st Appearances figure they did of Cass seemed really quite weird, too.

Well, we know from Gotham Central that the Joker had a number of accurate Robin costumes run up for some plan or other he never got around to using.

Actually, I can picture Joker and Harley having their own little Bat-wardrobe with a complete set of Bat-clan costumes.. and every once in a while, when he's bored, one or other, or both, or a hapless innocent, will put random combinations on... and unspeakableness of one form or another will occur.

In the animated series, she sounded different as Dr. Quinzel and as Harley Quinn. Her normal voice is a bit deeper than her Harley voice. She sounded different yet again in disguise in "The Man Who Killed Batman".

Does this lead to that story where Harley works in Metropolis for the Daily Planet?

Hmmm...maybe it's just me, but Harley wasn't actually doing anything wrong when Robin and real-Batgirl attacked her. Admittedly, dressing in Barbara's costume was arguably tasteless and provocative. (being an IRL troll, DCU style) but does that actually justify physically attacking her? Dressing up as Batgirl isn't actually a crime.

I'd love to see the scene if they took her to the police station for this. "Uuum I hate to tell you this, but fancy dress isn't illegal guys"

Oh that would be funny alright.

That happened in the DCAU comic tie-in "Batgirl Adventures." Harley gets Babs!Batgirl to chase her through Gotham, then gets her to help rescue Ivy from some terrorist group who wanted Ivy's formulas. Harley let Batgirl bring her (Harley) to the police afterward, but since she had been released from Arkham, they had to let her go.

I think I'm in love. *rushes off to find more Harley Quinn comics*

Aaah, Nightwing is so cute when he's mad! And Harley keeps walloping poor Timmy without even intending to!

Not sure whether I like Harley getting the drop on Cassie, of all people, although it was admitedly a neat way to do it. But it shuldn't have given her that much of an advantage. Cassie is better than Shiva, for crying out loud.

I will say that Harley looks disconcertingly like Babs in that outfit.

As are Clayface and Poison Ivy. While the storyline is cute, I hate how incompetent the batfamily appears. They're used to fighting superhumans and shouldn't have quite this much trouble.

But, of course, if Harley's captured, the story ends, so the batfamily can't succeed. I only wish there had been a way to let Harley get away without the Batfamily seeming ridiculously incompetent.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]bluefall

Cass, actually, was kept away from metahumans. She had very little experience with them, particularly in hand-to-hand, and Bruce definitely didn't let her near anyone remotely on Ivy or Clayface's level if he could help it. And this was early in her career, well before the one time she fought Ivy (which job she needed Bruce's backup to finish anyway).

I don't think they come off incompetent here at all. Harley doesn't just have the edge psychologically here, she's got a whole knife drawer. She's spitting on their *fallen.* None of them are calm or thinking straight, and even with that, she still needs backup from an entire barfull of thugs to make her escape... after which they immediately find her, bag her and hand her over to the authorities. Win for the Bat-team. They're not the ones who let her get away.

[info]ebailey140

They didn't actually bag her, that issue. After she bogged Batman down with henchmen, she completed her master plan for the evening, which was to play matchmaker for two of the detectives that had been chasing her for months. She let them catch her, with Ivy in the Batgirl costume arriving to collect her, before the Bat crew made it to that room. She knew it was only a matter of time, though, so she and Ivy skipped town.

But, Cass isn't better than Batman, and Harley's gotten the drop on him.

Also, Cass had major problems fighting the Joker, because he's especially difficult to "read". Add using psychology as much as being physical in a fight, plus being just slightly metahuman with the enhanced strength, agility, and reflexes, and you've got someone that's going to give even Cass problems.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]ladymirth

Actually, Cassie is better than Batman. I mean, Shiva is better than Batman, so if Cassie can beat her, it stnds to reason she can beat Batman. Of course, the only time they ever fought it turned out to be a stand still, but I always thought she didn't try very hard since all she was trying to do at the time was prove a point and score some cuddles from him later.

I get your point that Harley may have an advantage by being slightly meta, but Cassie has gone up against metas earlier. Plus, it's hard to be unpredictable when your body telegraphs your every move a split second before you make it. (Well, it's supposed to, anyway.)

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]ebailey140
2009-04-03 02:23 am UTC (link)

Again, Cass had trouble beating the Joker in a fight. Harley's got the Joker's advantage, plus the fighting skills, enhanced strength, speed, and reflexes. Cass has the advantage in fighting skills, but Harley is just a little bit stronger, a little bit faster, and reacts a little bit quicker than Cass.

I'd guess she'd also have problems with Deadpool and this guy who was one of Harley's teammates in the Justice League of Anarchy...

Actually, Joker's advantages don't extend to Harley. Joker's far more insane than Quinn could ever hope to be.

Really, Cass' problem is that Tim was getting in her way. Harley pulled only one over Batgirl, but Cass still made Harley pay for it. One on one, I think Cass would have floored Harley. All her enhancements really mean is that she's on par with the other Bat folks without half the training.

Now this is what I love, watching the Batfamily spend a wacky evening together. "How can you tell, I'm wearing a mask!" is kind of my favorite, though. See, that's who Dick's supposed to be, guys. He and Tim are both very funny but in different ways. Also every time I read an older story I miss Batgirl's monosyllabic dialogue.

Also: "Zut alors! My vision--she is blocked!" *salutes* Hey, random French guy!

This story is so much fun. Harley is at her best when she can mess with people's heads like this. What's amusing is that she barely has to try here, because she couldn't have predicted the level of indigence and irritation the Bat-crew would feel in response to her wearing that costume.
