I bring you a scan from a very funny webcomic called Wasted Talent, which title makes sense in a strange way as the artist seems to have a very complicated job designed for terribly smart people and only draws for fun.
And here's my personal little rant about the loss of lj!scans_daily, feel free to ignore.
I'm always a little behind the news so it's not a shock that I just found out an hour ago that scans_daily had been shut down. Logically I've always known it wasn't strictly legal but felt the pros of the community far outweighed the cons, and judging by everyone else having turned a blind eye for five years I figured I wasn't the only one.
Now I just feel alone.
Is what they say true? Was it all just to cheat a couple of bucks out of the companies to read bits of the comics for free? Well I'm going to say that's not how it happened in my case, and I have power of the truth inside my words.
I can safely say that I had never read a comic book before I found scans_daily. It's where I found my first title and many others after that. I found things that I liked and discovered so many new things as well. I learnt that bad comics can be just as fun as good ones, if not more so. I learnt that a beautiful piece of cover art in it's shiny plastic bag I see in the comic stores can hide the most eye gouging art inside.
I learned alot, but what I'll miss the most though is the comments from my fellow members, to hear what they like, hate or think is mind numbingly stupid about the scans is to hear the opinions of people like me. People I wouldn't be able to hold a conversation with in real life, at scans_daily we can connect through shared opinions and friendly arguments. Sure we can talk without the scans but it seems to me it would be like having a debate without any evidence on hand. I certainly don't buy all the comics that are discussed and couldn't afford to even if I wanted to.
Comic Books/Graphic Novels/Manga/Webcomics, this medium is not just a hobby or a job, it's a community, one that is often misunderstood and stereotyped because it's so hard to break into. Scans_daily more than anything I've seen so far has worked to breach that gap.
