Wondy #30
Three pages of interest from this week's ish.

First, we have the return of the Amazons to the island.

Keep an eye out for that bird, it's freaking everywhere in this storyline.

... okay. Akila is not a blonde white chick. Akila looks like this:

Notice how tremendously not-blonde and not-white she is, and the ways in which she in no way resembles the woman speaking to Hippolyta. That is some hardcore headdesk-inducing fail, there. Look, I think her eyes are even blue. Jesus Christ, NOT COOL, guys.

On the other hand. AKILA! Holy shit, you guys, that is so fucking fantastic. She's not dead! She's an acknowledged cast member! Her awesome potential can be explored!

Then, we have Cheetah's plan, as explained by Morrow after Diana smashes the crap out of half the Society.

That's... not a plan, that's a summary of events. And not very Minerva, either, or at least not the interesting version of her, so I will continue to assume she's playing a longer, more self-serving and less mustache-twirling game that we (and Morrow) still don't know about until I am forced not to. This Cheetah has not, thus far, done much for me, and the torture scene was really eyerolltastic (Barbara Freaking Minerva is afraid of getting her tail cut off? Really?), but that moment in Secret Six was the most FUCK YEAH CHEETAH scene since Jimenez left the book, so I choose to remain optimistic.

On the other hand, dig Shrapnel being unwilling to start shit with Diana. This ish does a pretty good job of demonstrating what an unstoppable badass she is. At least, when she's crazy-raged. Genocide infecting her through the lasso, I wonder, or is she just losing it? She's drifted so far from herself from the Heinboot that losing the last vestige of her center seems more than plausible at this point.

The reunion was rather nice and this issue was definitely fantastic in giving a full 'fuck yeah! She's awesome... though also a bit scary' feeling. In that I can only say you should have included the panel with her holding the guy(name, escapes me) up, so badass.

Wait, who was Akila again? Not the Vegas amazon.

I'ma post that annual sometime soon, perhaps in my own journal since I'll be spending most of the 1/3 limit on the Nu'bia post... Akila was a Bana who went to Oxford to get a Man's World education. It's not clear whether this was a freak experiment by her incredibly radical mother, or something the Bana just do occasionally with their failed-as-a-warrior children in order to keep an eye on the outside world (seems doubtful, but would explain things like Grace), or what.

Anyway, after the Bana hooked up with the Themyscirans, Polly thought it would be helpful to them to have a leader of their own other than her, someone who could be their advocate and have some authority in amazon culture and help the Bana to feel like they had a voice and some structure. She chose Akila, appointing her Shim'tar.

Akila is not a very good warrior by Bana standards, which is why she was sent off the reservation in the first place; her people don't really respect her very much, and as a Bana, neither do the Themyscirans, and she has to have a pretty weird perspective on the world having been educated both by the xenophobic misandrist Bana and the patriarchal but extensive world of the Western university. So there was a lot of interesting stuff seething around her character from her first introduction (the JLApe Wondy annual, where she journeys to the underworld with Nu'bia [the Vegas amazon] and Diana and Artemis).

And then Jimenez killed her off off-panel without ever touching her.

I'm incredibly glad she's back, and I hope she stays in charge and stays interesting and frees up Artemis to be all adventure-y again (interesting, isn't it, that Artemis isn't here, leading her people?). I also hope that somebody remembers next time that she's NOT WHITE HOLY GEEZ.

So much nude hugging you'd think it was a Perez issue!

Quite liked this one (though the Olympian and Genocide plots still have blissfully little to do with each other).

Yet another reason the Perez run is so great. :)

. . .

Well, even the dark-skinned Bana don't seem all that dark-skinned.

As to the hair, well, she obviously got a haircut, maybe she dyed it as well when she was bliss-fully ignorant in Man's World?

The person who Polly hands the sword to does appear to have darker skin than her, and would from context be assumed to be Akila. That really doesn't excuse the hair, though.

Love the art. All those women are naked, and yet they don't look cheesecake-y, they look confident and badass :D

Although I still feel sorry for the poor, heart-broken guy who was left behind ;_;

I haven't read this isse yet, but...

Barbara Freaking Minerva is afraid of getting her tail cut off? Really?

Why not? Isn't a cat's tail kind of like spinal cord? Plus Minerva's is prehensile. Surely it has all kinds of important nervous tissues she very much wouldn't want to lose.

That's... not a plan, that's a summary of events.

All plans become summary of events at some point.

Why not?

Same reason that Bruce Wayne isn't afraid of falling off the side of a building. Something happens to you enough times, you kind of get used to it. Cheetah gets her tail hacked off on a regular basis, it's kind of a running theme with her, really, the tail-based defeat. At least twice, it's been the tiara itself that does it. If I were Minerva, I'd be hanging there going "my tail? Really? Really, Princess? That's so tired. Lop a toe off or something, just for variety's sake."

[info]bluefall

This is *half* the Minerva I want. She's brilliant, cunning, has this massive over-arching plan, has deftly manipulated an entire cadre of supervillains into something that benefits only her - it's awesome and I love it.

But.

Thus far, all of the maintext and the overriding implication of the subtext is that she's doing this to hurt Diana. She says in this issue that this is all about her playing with her food, that the entirety of her purpose is to demoralize and destroy Diana; Morrow backs that up here when he tells her that the whole thing with Genocide was about isolating and alienating Diana. The Psycho thing, the demolition of the DMA, the targeting of Etta, it all adds up to "I live to destroy you, I take sadistic relish in your pain."

That's the Rucka/Pfeifer Cheetah in action, the one who's actually flat-out cruel and sadistic rather than coldly indifferent, whose relationship with Diana is uncomplicated loathing. It ignores that Diana has been friend, resource and savior to Minerva far more often than she's ever been her enemy, and that Minerva is a greedy, selfish collector of knowledge, not a sociopathic predator. The Cheetah is a sociopathic predator, sure, but the Cheetah doesn't make elaborate plans; that's the Minerva half's job. The Cheetah just bloodlusts, which is a very primal, immediate, physical thing. An elaborate plan to cause Diana maximum pain is a waste of Cheetah and Diana's complicated history and Minerva's complex character; that's the sort of thing we have Circe for, y'know?

There's reason to suspect, though, that Minerva has more going here than we've seen. If nothing else, this is awfully early in the story for the ultimate foiling of the mastermind, which Minerva seems to be. So it's quite possible there's still some actual benefit to here here somewhere beyond mustache-twirling "I will make Wonder Woman suffer!", which would make me, already pleased with her supreme competence, totally ecstatic about her overall portrayal.

Eh, Etta's not dead. Diana thought she was in shock or worse, which just means nonresponsive. Her soul might be shattered, which is something where death would arguably be preferable, but also something Diana can probably fix when she gets the lariat back.
