This is true too. In fact, I'd describe that shallowness as being akin to Jim Shooter's dictum in the 80s at Marvel about lines of dialogue that should sum up the character. I call this approach ABP for "Always Be Pitching." To me this is unnatural. It might be harder to show these things rather than simply tell them, but you're doing a story, not a presentation. It's a little too bullet-point for me.
