Dinah's not homophobic, Ollie!
One scan posted from the preview for JLA 31. The rest can be found here.

But things always seem so much more serious when your wife thinks you're gay.
Photobucket

"How could you do this Ollie? You swore you weren't gay! You promised!"

But no way is Dinah homophobic. She's just pretending, so that Ollie won't suspect her secret relationship with Oracle.

It's not homophobic if it's true.

Though, yeah, if Ollie had been on his game, the correct response would have been, "Project much, Dinah? Look, just because you regret breaking up with Oracle..."

Nice try at shifting the subject there, Ollie.

I know SOMEONE who's not getting any tonight. (Unless he sleeps over at Hal's place.)

Reading the rest of the preview, Diana clocks Ollie because she's mad.

Hahah. Very funny.

NOT.

She's a trained martial artist, for Pete's sake. Did she learned marriage skills from Henry Pym? If Hank Pym hitting Janet Van Dyne-Pym is spousal abuse, isn't THIS?

It doesn't make it better because she's a svelte blonde female and he's a male. That svelte blonded has incapitated bruisers twice her size.

She'll be lucky if he just leaves the TEAM.

Sorry. That whole sequence rubbed me the wrong way, big time.

Yeah, rubs me the wrong way too. I really don't like seeing this type of crap. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean that doesn't freaking hurt. Hell, I've been thrown down the stairs by my mom. Women can be really damn strong.

And the fact that it's played for comedy just makes me sick. Abuse isn't funny, and it never will be or should be.

If the conversation was about how the punch-happy partner felt about the other expressing a conflicting viewpoint in the company of others at the dinner table when the punch-happy one had been expecting affirmation, you'd have the intro to an ep of Law & Order.

Of course, what we have here is also the classic pack behaviour where the Beta (Ollie) has challenged the authority of the Alpha (Dinah); it is the Alpha's duty as pack leader to put the Beta in his place. And while they're nice about it, the JLA is a pack. If the Alpha proves weak by being unable to exert authority over its members, especially those she's meant to have a close relationship with, is there really any doubt that they'd suggest someone else take over?

If Dinah is acting within her authority as head of the JLA then it's Ollie's duty as a member to obey her. Arguably as her spouse it's also his duty to support her. The dialogue indicates that he's a free agent, so the first onus is not upon him. The second, though...

Being married doesn't mean you can't be independant, though if a spouse were to pursue an agenda completely contradictory to that of the other you might have to question if they should be together in the first place. You'd also have to question how secure that union was if Dinah felt unable to simply say "There is a line between business and home life I choose not to cross: do you folks with your secret identities have a problem with that?".

However, Dinah is meant to be the primary focus of Ollie's emotional and intimate world, otherwise why get married. For him to abandon solidarity with her in favour of his emotional bond with Hal is in essence a concrete form of betrayal. Especially when he makes the Freudian slip of describing his time with Hal as being "the best days of my life" without prefexing "Before we were together".

And if we've been taught anything by superheroes it's surely that betrayal is worthy of punishment...

Guess he's cheating on her again!

Ha, I kid. But damn, am I glad to see Benes off art. This is gorgeous. The coloring really complements it as well.

Actually, I think this is pretty homophobic.
She's implying a homosexual relationship for the express purpose of insulting/humiliating Ollie. That's textbook homophobia.
I'm a bit disappointed here.

Great, now I'm agreeing with Green Arrow. These are truly the end times.

-facepalm-

This is getting really freakin' old, guys. Dinah, who can kill people with her bare hands, would not hit her husband.

I'm <3 Ollie here. SO MUCH. I think I'll pick up this issue if he keeps rockin' so hard.

Also, lol wait, when did JLA's art not suc1k anymore? Oh hey, it's the same guy who drew that adorable issue of Robin!

Isn't Ollie's comment that her comment is homophobic actually homophobic?

Hold on, I need a minute to figure this out...I guess because her comment wasn't implying anything bad about gay people. But his comment is what makes it seem homophobic, so the homophobia is all on him...I think.

I thought part of the point of "Green Lantern: Rebirth" is that Hal wouldn't be playing "Hard-Traveling Heroes" anymore. The Parallax entity was supposed to be the reason Hal kept wandering around with Ollie.

Of course, forming a separate JL team isn't the same as wandering around the country like nomadic idiots.
