Current music:Vs. Dio - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OST
Entry tags:char: adam strange, char: brainiac 2/vril dox, char: harbinger/lyla michaels, char: lyrl dox, char: starro the conqueror, creator: andy clarke, creator: tony bedard, title: r.e.b.e.l.s.

Starro's next move and Sinestro's next GET
this week on REBELS, Vril Dox has to deal with both Starro the Conqueror and the Blackest Night.

meanwhile, Starro's staying out of it (his attempt to join the Sinestros or whatever over in Teen Titans some time ago through a probe not having panned out), choosing instead to capture Lyrl Dox in a bid to make capturing Vril easier..

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

.. but then realizing:

hell, if you've got a perfectly serviceable 12th level on hand, why not use HIM instead?

elsewhere, Vril and co realize Starro's taken Lyrl... and that Starro has the tech to undo chemical lobotimizations.

So one OH SHIT later, it's off to get him back with Adam Strange and Captain Comet along for the ride...

except, along the way, they run into a battle of Black Lanterns and Sinestros.

and one particular Black Lantern lands a kill:

consequently, that Sinestro's ring?

Picks one heck of a replacement:

which is good, considering that in addition to that BL, there's the one opposite him on the page.

The one who's got something of a grudge against Vril.

Who is it?

Pick up R.E.B.E.L.S 10 to find out explicitly, because I'm out four pages now.

Methinks this artist is a fan of LoXG.

Y'know...I wouldn't ever have called it, but...it works.

It's certainly the only Corps he could possibly be a member of.

Red - while he's got a short temper, it's never developed into an actual RAGE.
Orange - while he's certainly avaricious enough to wield the Orange light I doubt even he could manage to pry it from Larfleez, and he's too smart to be consumed by Larfles.
Green - he's got the prerequisites, no doubt, but his utter contempt for the greenies would keep him from taking a ring, even under these circumstances.
Blue - while I can't think of a particular example of him expressing it, he's exactly the personality type to hold the concept of 'hope' in utter contempt.
Indigo - ...and 'compassion' isn't even on his radar.
Violet - while he did seem to have some affection for Stealth at the end of the last REBELS series, when they settled down to raise the kid, 'affection' is as far as it went, clearly.

Well, if someone manages to off him, the bar for getting called up to the Black Lanterns is fairly low, so...

But someone needs to successfully KILL the mofo for that, so....

When it comes to legion continuity....I give up!
Brainiac 5 has already detailed his ancestors, none of which include lyrl so assuming he dies childless its out the window

But which Brainiac 5 now stems from THIS Earth;s present, and have we seen HIS origin for sure?

To be honest these little retcons in this and Secret Origin have convinced me this is a back door reboot when we were told it would be as close as possible to the 'pre-crisis' legion. Its not like they were fixing big gaping holes like Superboy/Supergirl its changing things for the sake of changing things. Its like we have to assume its all in continuity until we are told otherwise and that doesn't work for me because that is no continuity at all. As much as I love Brainy he wasn't meant to be in secret origin. He joined later, so what point did that change serve. What point did making Lyrl Brainiac 3 serve? The best analogy I can say is that Geoff Johns has done a Smallville on Legion continuity, the backbone is there but the detail is taking some odd turns. I would have preferred a big push on the threeboot compared to this.

Well, history goes to the victors, you know. Maybe Lyrl goes down so badly he's completely stricken from the record?

The other BL is Stealth, who was alive until a few issues ago when Bedard killed her.

I assumed her death was a fakeout and she'd end up being resurrected with some malarkey about her mysterious origins. Didn't she die in the original Legion? And how long has Harbinger been dead, anyway? Some of the people on this comm probably weren't even born yet when she kicked the bucket. It was kind of weird seeing her again, I was all, "Hey, it's that chick from, uh, the Dominion War? Wait, did that actually happen or was it airbrushed out of history?" I tried Googling the answer for ten minutes then gave up. I suck as a comic book dork.

Harbinger showed up in the Supergirl arc of Superman/Batman. I don't remember seeing her after that.

She also showed up in the Donna Troy mini leading into Infinite Crisis, I'm pretty sure.

Yes, and Donna Troy apparently inherited her role as Harbinger (since there was something about them being analogous beings), that didn't last long.

I bought this at a big chain store in the UK, first day and I got no ring

Yeah, my LCS didn't have the rings first day, either. I had to save my receipt and come in the next day to get it.

My LCS is also the lesser of two stores in town owned by the same guy, and all the rings came in at the other one. I think they pooled orders between the two locations to hit the quota required to order them. If yours was a chain, maybe a similar thing happened and they're at another location?
(this was really the only ring i care about getting, though, so lucky for REBELS)

Though I've gotta say, I think this was a good example of how tie-ins should play things. So little of it was actually devoted to the actual Blackest Night tie-in that the outsiders coming in get a good dose of what REBELS is about, and might be more likely to stay, which is exactly what a struggling title like this one needs. The more I think about it, the more I like it, and the more I'm thinking I should follow this title every month.

It's funny how almost every Brainiac is getting big moments nowadays.

B1 is in Adventure and the super titles.

2 and 3 (are we really gonna count Lyrl?) are in REBELS.

The 5's are around and may play a part in the super titles aside from B5(1).

And Brainiac 8 may or may not show up eventually to try offing Donna like that Omen showed in Titans.

I am liking this book. The annual with the Starro origin was excellent. This issue was a nice bridge between two plots

So... now we have a good guy in the sinestro corps? Coolness.

Vril does count as a good guy right? I'm kind of murky on which Brainiac is which.

Ehh. Guess you could say he's a good guy to have at your side. Unless he considers you expendable.

But he's not outright villainous, no.

Not so much "good", more... "probably acts for the greater good if he has a vested interest in it, but individuals maybe won't appreciate his methods or attitude about it"

Vril is happy to maintain the status quo of the universe because its getting him paid. If he went around destroying bad guys for free he'd have no clients but if something threatens that merc business like starro or black lanterns he will fall on the side that will be in his long term best interests. For example, Starro could give him money to leave him alone but Vril will see his L.E.G.I.O.N contracts as worth more in the long term. Of course Vril isn't just about excessive money, he's clever, even if Starro sets him up for life its Starro. What is stopping him going back on his offer after he controls the rest of the universe? He's a complex fellow, is Vril.
